I got to watch this female barred owl fish along a lake shore on multiple occasions, most of the time near sunset. On this day though I watched her go fishing late morning (near lunch time) and saw her catch this large fish. I couldn’t get good shots of her in the act of catching the fish from the angle I watched it from. But several minutes later she flew to a tree right next to the main path and I stumbled on her looking at me as I rounded the corner. What a gift it was to see all of this!

I loved this sunset lake view with the great blue heron on the log for a silhouette and the reflections of the water. I only had my large zoom lens with me for my Nikon camera so I used my iPhone to capture the scene as best I could.

I’m always amazed at what barred owls will eat. I’ve seen them eat other birds including small song birds or ducks, frogs, snapping turtles, rodents and now fish. I watched this one catch the fish and this is an image of the feast that followed
