Last night (Dec 12th), I photographed the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train as it traveled through Minneapolis and over the Mississippi River. In the background is the Lowery Ave Bridge and Downtown Minneapolis.

November 10th marked the 49th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior. Every year Split Rock Lighthouse is lit to mark the occasion and remember the 29 crew members who died that day. I've taken many photographs of the lighthouse, but this was the first time I've seen it lit. It was a moving experience. The last photograph was taken the next morning at Sunrise. (Edit - added one more photo from the next morning)

Highland Park Water Tower photos. The city of Saint Paul allows visitors to climb the 150 steps to the top of the water tower twice a year - third weekend in July, second weekend in October. This past weekend was the Fall open house. It was very windy and cold at the top. The scattered clouds made for dramatic skies.

My contribution to the Northern Lights photos from last night (10-Oct). I started shooting at about 9:15 and my first couple of shots had the most activity and colors. Over time, it seemed that the lights faded. At about 10:30, clouds were moving in so I quit for the night.

Acadia National Park in Maine. I was able to get out a couple mornings to photograph the sunrise. The photos of the lighthouse from Cadillac Mountain were taken in the late afternoon. It is a beautiful park - I would love to get back there someday.

More mushrooms emerged from the mulch in front of our house. If you look closely, you can see small bits of wood that are still on the mushrooms. I brushed off some of the wood chips, but I was concerned that I would damage the mushrooms if I tried to remove all of the small bits of wood.

A little technical info - this was shot with the Nikon Z8 and the Nikon 105mm macro lens (1/15 sec, f/4, ISO 64). I used the Focus shift shooting feature and let the camera adjust the focus point. I used a Focus shift width of 3 and set up the camera to take 100 images. When I imported the images into Lightroom, I discovered that 50 images were enough to have the mushrooms in focus from front to back. The images (50 of them) were stacked in HeliconFocus. I did a little bit of retouching in Helicon, then reimported the image back into Lightroom for final edits.

Some interesting mushrooms appeared in the mulch in front of our house. They lasted only through the morning and by noon they had collapsed.

Shot with the Nikon Z 105 macro lens (focus stacked) and processed in Lightroom and HeliconFocus. Helicon does a better job (in my opinion) than Photoshop when you need to focus stack multiple macro images.

Just a few photos from earlier this week. I like to have a plan or an idea of what I want to photograph when I go out in the morning, but since I couldn't think of anything, I just winged it. Sometimes that's the best way.
