When I was a little kid, I loved having a camera in my hands.

I wanted to be just like my dad because he always had his cool camera with him. I would go with my parents to see air shows, and they would always give me a disposable camera to take pictures while we were there. As I got older, I took to borrowing my dad’s camera to take pictures of the things I liked. My parents bought a digital camera while I was in high school, and I’m positive I got more use

out of it than they did. I had no real idea what I was doing back then, other than pointing a camera at something that I thought looked interesting and pressing the shutter and thinking what I had captured was pretty neat. At that point, I had never taken a picture of anything and gotten a result that wowed me, and I was disappointed by that. I wanted to learn how to take pictures like the ones I had seen when I looked through outdoors magazines, my dad’s aviation books, and my uncle’s car posters. When I graduated from high school, I went to Inver Hills Community College and took their Introduction to Digital Photography course. The course required the students to use a DSLR, and so I had the perfect to excuse go buy a brand new one of my own. There I learned some of the basic fundamentals of photography, and I realized how much more involved the photographic world was then I originally thought. I wanted to learn more, so I transferred to Dakota County Technical College and enrolled in the DCTC Photography program. In my time at DCTC, I’ve been able to open up my creative side and have created images that I never knew I would be able to. With my photography, I strive to capture uplifting beauty that many people may miss. With my subject focus surrounding natural landscapes and wildlife I do my best to showcase the great outdoors by creating images that capture the beauty of the natural world. In my portraiture, and in my wedding shooting, I capture candid moments of joy and excitement and outward expression, and in doing so I hope to portray the beauty of individuality and relationships for my subjects.

I was lucky to spend some time at Fischbecks’ Weigelwood Resort on Two Inlets Lake and saw several hummingbirds over the weekend. I wish I had more time behind the camera with them, but I got at least one shot I'm very happy with. Enjoy!

A lovely encounter with a loon from a week ago on Two Inlets Lake.

Every time I go out with the Canon 1DX II, I'm amazed at the consistency in the results I bring back. The focus system does not miss. Those in the photo world understand just how difficult it can be to keep a subject at a distance in focus. I know this is a pro DSLR body (still refusing to switch to mirrorless), but the fact that it's THAT different from what I've used prior just makes me appreciate the results that much more.

I love the way the water flowing around the loon differs from image to image. I'll never tire of seeing a loon on the water. I hope to one day capture a successful series of images of a loon taking off from the water - I haven't been that lucky yet, but I won't stop trying.

My dad asked me when I shot this series, as he controlled the boat a safe and comfortable distance from the loon, and he heard me fire off a long series of images at 14 frames per second - "How many of those do you actually keep?"

Well dad, not all of them.... but more than I ever could before my 1DX II. I had to leave out several crisp shots from this series to be able to contain the post for Instagram or there would be 20+. Just incredible.

I need to shoot more. Here's hoping for more interaction with wildlife on my next trip!

Warbirds are my favorite to see and photograph at air shows. To give a more classic look and to more fully appreciate their history, I've edited these in a more stark black and white style with just a touch of added grain. The smoke from the show really helps with the effect to make it feel as though it could be an image of wartime action. The B-25J "Miss Mitchell", and the P-51C Mustang "Tuskeegee Airmen" are both based in Minnesota and are personal favorites of mine. The bombay doors on "Miss Mitchell" can be seen opened up for a demo "bombing run" in which some blazing pyrotechnics were set off out of frame. The P-47D Thunderbolt "Bonnie" is the only Republic-built, razorback P-47D that is currently flying in the world today.

Had a great day at AirVenture in Oshkosh today! Always a great experience. Unfortunately missed out on some great demos from earlier in the week such as the A-10, F-22, and F-35, as well as some WWII heavy bombers, though got to see some of those on static display on the ground and still saw a great show. If you haven't been, you should go!

A loon feeding along the shoreline, trying to fend off a swarm of blood-sucking black flies by diving frequently and restlessly. According to loonproject.org, up to 70% of first nests are abandoned in years with strong black fly presence - and it seems as though 2024 will be one of those years judging from this encounter. Hopefully we will still have a successful nesting season this year!

These deer did not seem to mind the unseasonably warm start to winter. They also seemed to welcome my presence for a few moments before wandering off.

Minnesota is turning golden! Don’t miss out on the beauty of early autumn. Yes, I know the calendar says it’s still summer, but let’s be real - fall is here!

Biiiiiig stretch!! Did you know that loons will “run” across the surface of the water to gain enough speed for lift-off? Depending on the wind, they may need up to ¼ of a mile for a takeoff run!
