🌺 June is National Caribbean-American Heritage Month. A time to celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and global contributions of Caribbean-American communities.
From literature and music to activism, art, and liberation movements, Caribbean voices have shaped the world in powerful and lasting ways. Their stories remind us that Black history is global, woven across islands and continents: this day and every day.
Before the world knew her as Dr. Maya Angelou, the poet and literary icon, she was also known as “Miss Calypso,” performing Caribbean-inspired music and dance in San Francisco nightclubs during the 1950s. Her 1957 album “Miss Calypso” reflected her love for rhythm, storytelling, and the global sounds of the African diaspora; long before her words would become world-renowned.
Dr. Angelou’s life reflected this same understanding of connection across borders. Through her travels, artistry, and activism, she recognized that our stories do not stop at borders; they continue across oceans.
“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.”
This month, we honor transformation, resilience, and the brilliance of Caribbean-American voices whose legacies continue to inspire.
Whose story from the diaspora has shaped your perspective most? 🌍✨
