This week is a heavy one, I had to say goodbye to my girl Riley aka “Princess”. 🐾 💔 🌈

Some of you know that she’s been battling an enlarged heart, stenosis and bone spurs for the last 18 months and last weekend she got to a point where I knew it was time.

Something I’ve been mentally preparing for since I picked the runt of the littler nearly 12 years ago. When we got to year 5 and 8 I thought there’s no way, then she made it to 10 and 11. She was 7 weeks from making it 12 full amazing years with me, not a single moment I will for get.

For those that don’t know, she was well loved, some say spoiled but they are just wrong 😂.

Her last day was no different, she had a good breakfast, treats, an easter egg hunt (eggs filled with treats she would gently open, take the treat and put the eggs in a pile), a plate of chicken, ice cream and Oreos. In between all of that she was surrounded by everyone she loved, getting all the pets and cuddles one deserves and spent her last hours laying outside where she enjoyed most days.

I will miss you girl, you were my side kick, my adventure partner always ready for a roadtrip, always ready to strike a pose and capture the hearts of anyone that saw you. Until I see you again, go chase those butterflies, sunbathe on the beach, chase the waves and let the wind flop your ears around. I’ll love you forever and always ❤️ 🐾 Dad

I've been quiet on socials again, but I've also been working on this in the background. So excited to bring MonsoonCon back in 2026!

MonsoonCon is back for 2026, and I’m excited to share that Jim Tang Photography will be joining us as this year’s keynote speaker.

Jim’s work has shaped how many of us think about photographing storms. His approach blends technical precision, field awareness, and timing in a way that turns difficult conditions into repeatable results. He’s also one of the most thoughtful voices in the storm photography community right now, and having him open the day sets the tone for what this event is meant to be.

After several years away, MonsoonCon returns on June 27, 2026 at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson. This has always been a gathering built specifically for Southwest storm photographers and chasers!

We’ll be announcing additional speakers over the coming weeks, covering forecasting, lightning capture, field technique, and creative approaches to photographing the monsoon.

If monsoon season is the part of the year you plan around, this is the place to be!

Rule of thirds. Low ISO. Only shoot at golden hour. Yeah, I’ve heard it all too.
But honestly? Some of my favorite images happened when I let go of the “shoulds” and just trusted myself.

I wrote a new post about the best advice I ignored and why showing up, messing up, and breaking the rules sometimes leads to the best work.

Some of my favorite shots have happened when I stopped thinking about what anyone else might say and just shot what felt right.

When you’re not trying to impress anyone, it’s easier to enjoy the process and trust your gut.

Full moon tonight. Not great for astro, but still one of my favorite excuses to step outside and just slow down. I might shoot it. I might just watch it rise and enjoy the quiet.

Either way, it’s a good night to look up.

I used to avoid the histogram like it was optional…

Now it’s one of the first things I check before and after every shot. Same with metering modes, once you get how they work, they make shooting in tricky light so much easier.

There’s something about being under the stars with no pressure, no plan, and no one to answer to.

This one was taken out in the Uinta Mountains, a quiet night, a little cold, and exactly what I needed. No agenda… just a chance to breathe, look up, and let the camera do what it does.

Sometimes, getting back to the basics is the reset you didn’t know you needed.
