Photo dump because I haven't formally introduced her to most people yet, but seems like as good a day as any to officially welcome my training and adventure buddy, Cortana! Named after the iconic artificial intelligence from the Halo series, she's as smart AND free willed as her name sake and counterpart. She came home with me this past December 29th, but I've held off on introducing her because I didn't know how it would work out, with me, with her, with life. My last dog, Balboa, man, he was the best good boy, and I'll forever miss him, but it was time. I needed someone as stubborn as me to teach me patience and as ready to play as I've wanted to for years. Here's to seeing what the trail holds for us

Last year, I finally took the leap in starting my own small business with Soul Owed, LLC, and almost immediately, life happened. I weathered more changes and transitions than I ever thought I could in the past 12 months, but now? Well, life is still happening, but I’ve grabbed it by the horns and am hanging on tight!

I took this shot from the summit of Guadalupe Peak a few years ago on a trip that was meant to launch Soul Owed, LLC at the time. It didn’t happen then, but it feels like the right image for this moment now. Nothing fancy—just looking ahead. Looking higher.

Sic parvis magna... Great things from small beginnings. I don’t know how great Soul Owed, LLC will become, but this is my small beginning, and that means there’s potential. And that’s good enough for me.

Thanks to those who’ve humored me from the start and to the new followers who thought they’d give a local guy a like. It means the world to me.

For now, keep an eye out for:

It was incredible photographing so many of the amazing and determined runners this year at the 2025 Crazy Desert Trail Race! Run, walk, hike, EVERYONE did amazing. Thinking about the interactions, no matter how brief, I had with so many people put a smile on my face while I was working on these. Here are just a FEW of my favorite moments and characters from that day! Check out the full gallery at https://soulowed.smugmug.com/Crazy-Desert-Trail-Race-2025

Happy World Beard Day! Here's to all the beards that make us slightly more attractive, even if it is catching some salt and pepper in it these days... "This is my beard. There are many like it, but this one is mine."

If you've met with me in the last couple of years, chances are you've seen me with one of these little books. I absolutely LOVE my yearly Legend Planner. I take it almost everywhere I go. It's undated, so you don't have to wait for a new year, and I started my third one this week.
I get to think about the next year in important aspects of my life from business and personal development to friendships and family. Each year is broken into quarters, months, and weeks. Each includes subsequent goals for the time period and rewards for achieving them. Mine have included things ranging from my favorite beer from SoCo Taphouse & Brew Co. to tickets to meet Stirling!
For every year I've used them, the more thought and emotion I put into the answers, and It's become more apparent each year just how quickly they fill up. This year, I spent time looking in past planners at all the things that were once just plans now a reality, like starting my business. Others still lay on the page unfulfilled, like learning to skateboard like I'd always wanted to as a kid or to finally finish that book I've always had in mind.
I don't want to take away from my accomplishments. Not when I'm this excited at what's ahead, but I will say in the words of good ol' Benjamin Franklin, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail." Any recommendations on planning tips? What do you use?

Who do you want to leave your story for? Your children? Grandchildren? Great grandchildren? Your biographer? How long do you want them to be able to look back and remember you and your life? Did you know an estimated 30% of photographs get thrown away after a loved one passes? A mind blowing 80-90% of digital photos are lost, never printed, or shared. Personally, I believe this is much higher. Did you know that the average lifespan of a USB drive or CD is just 5-10 years? Typical photo paper and ink purchased from a big box store usually last around 10-20 years before noticeable fading or degradation occurs. This lifespan can vary depending on factors like exposure to light, humidity, and the quality of the ink and paper used. In contrast, fine art or archival paper combined with high-quality archival inks can last over 100 years, sometimes even up to 200 years, without significant fading making them ideal for preserving memories over generations. This is why Soul Owed, LLC offers these options to each of my photography clients. The choice of medium isn’t just about today—it’s about ensuring that your memories are accessible for generations to come.

It's National Dog Day?! Well, sadly, I don't have my best bud anymore. Balboa passed a few years ago at 14 years old, and I just haven't been ready to get another. I think that speaks for how amazing he was. He was a swimming machine and LOVED the lake. We spent a lot of time out there together fishing and just sitting in the water. He was sharp as a tack, the easiest going pup you'd ever met, loyal to the end, and the goodest of good boys. They're only in our lives for a short time, but that time is their whole lives. Thanks for being part of my story, Balboa ❤️

I say this a lot, but for me, it started in Africa. The people, the places, the wildlife I'd only ever seen in National Geographic specials. Everything about it was so wonderous to me. It's been 10 years now since the last time I was there. It makes me sad, honestly. I always thought I'd go back and live there for an extended amount of time. 3 months. 6 months. A year maybe. Life happens, though, and the time, place, and most importantly, the people to go back with haven't fallen into place, yet. I miss their hope, faith, resiliency, and happiness, so if you're ever headed out that way, give me a holler.

13 years ago, my parents bought me my first camera for my first trip to Africa. To say that it was an important moment in my life would be an understatement, but I had no idea how much of my story would start in that moment at the time. What will you look back on in 13 years and remember with fondness? Also, still love photographing my friends ❤️
