So Kip just built this porch. He started it at Christmas and that means a lot to me. I joke about the Notebook, you know, every woman wants a man to build her a house. I just wanted a porch. And I got my porch! I used to joke that I would sit out on the front porch and just watch the cars go by and then tell people to stay off my lawn. But there is something about that. Maybe it is a return to La Feria except now I have my place and it’s a nicer place.

One of the few songs I had memorized was Eddy Murphy’s Party All The Time. So I started playing *singing* “my girl likes to party all the time” on the keyboard. It was so ridiculous. And then all these dudes playing bongos and drums all start singing “party all the time, party all the time”. *laughing* I remember that I was like a hit, but I was super embarrassed. And I remember my older brothers were laughing at me, “You’re playing Eddy Murphy!” But I’m like, hey, I didn’t get booed and I played a whole song!

Man, it sounds really 1950’s but this was late 1970’s early 1980’s and I think my whole childhood I was aware that I was living at least 20 years behind the rest of the world. I could tell because I watched TV and I knew that that wasn’t my existence. Like none of it.

I grew up watching 80’s movies and thinking people hung out at the mall, but I was never really allowed to. So when I would go it was with my grandmother. I always felt like this really modern world was just beyond the city limits. I just couldn’t get there. *laughs

From the time that I was 3-18 years old I lived in La Feria. Our house wasn’t even a house. It’s a big deal to me that I live in a house now, because it was like a storefront. So, when you think of old west towns and they have the barber and the saloon and the general store and it’s red brick…that’s the kind of building I grew up in.

Now I’m a teacher and seeing the greed of youth. When you’re young you want everything you see on TV and then coming to the realization it’s like really you just need to get what you need. With the world where does it end? The vast commercialization. I don’t want to be that.

“I got to visit with my paternal grandmother who lived here on the West Side and she started teaching me Spanish. So I started opening up to the Hispanic culture and art and I liked it a lot. So I started staying with her a lot more and that’s where I reestablished myself to be more fluent with the Spanish language. But my mom wouldn’t let me stay here full-time so I would go back home again. We lived in the Five Points Area which was majority an anglo area.”

“We lived with my mom and dad and I had three other siblings. I was born here in San Antonio, TX here on the West Side off of San Patricio and Murry. At the age of 4, my dad passed away. He was 24 when he passed away. He fell asleep and died. They say he had a heart condition. A couple of years later my mom moved to Chicago and she got remarried there. My step-father was anglo and we weren’t allowed to speak Spanish anymore. So we moved to California and we were there for like ten years because we left here when I was 4 and came back when I was 14.”

“I’m going on 9 years in August. I plan to stay here, because I helped with all of the structure. We did the bricks. We did the tiles. We did a lot of work in helping make the bricks. Putting together the dirt, the sand, the line, the saliva from the Nopales (cactus). So we put our hands on just about everything in this building and about a year ahead a time we did all the tiles that you see. This and on the floor and on the ceiling. Over the doors, all of the tiles over the door I did them; for some reason they picked all of those for over the door. So I’m proud of that too. And the sign outside that says Cooperativa Mujer Artes, I made those. And the ones right at the door that says Regresa Pronto which means come back soon.”

Now mind you Odessa is a notch on the bible belt. *laughs* So all those years everybody was trying to save me. ‘What are you?’ Everybody would always ask me that. ‘What are you?’ I would say, ‘What do you mean what am I?’
