Currently on view is the magnificent work of Cecilia Paredes. Cecilia Paredes creates self-portraits that play with disguise and metamorphosis. These “photo performances,” as the artist calls them, often involve her painting herself with bright, intricate patterns before documenting her body against a wall of the same motifs. Influenced by nature, Paredes also transforms herself into animals in realistic, glamorous studio portraits; an image of the artist adorned to resemble a majestic parrot was included in the 2005 Venice Biennale. Paying tribute to the flora and fauna of her native Peru, Paredes creates layered statements of her own identity. Her works also speak to humans’ relationship with nature and our responsibility to threatened environments.Cecilia Paredes lives and works between Philadelphia, USA, Lima, and Costa Rica. She studied Fine Arts at the Catholic University of Lima, the Cambridge Arts and Crafts School in England, and the Scuola del N**o in Rome. She is a 1998 Rockefeller Foundation Fellow.
Cecilia has lived many years outside Peru, her home country, she has lived in several countries and 25 years in Costa Rica before coming to the US.
She is a multidisciplinary artist whose work addresses themes of the relation between humans and nature as well as the fragility of life, compassion, otherness, migration and life in new territories. AWARDS
