A non-traditional view of sunrise at Mesa Arch, Canyonlands NP.
How often do you go to a highly visited place and leave thinking that the best parts were not the super-advertised attractions. I specifically think about Yosemite Falls, Logan Pass and Old Faithful. Our public lands are filled with amazing features throughout, if only we slow down between pullouts and take a short walk off the road or beaten trail.

The Grand Canyon is a marvel of weather. It may be the only place many people witness a storm below them, deep within the walls of this mile-deep canyon. Caught a rainy day a couple weeks ago that displayed the awesomeness of weather patterns in the desert, where water determines life for plants and animals alike. This view from the South Rim was an incredible spot to watch the system pass from.

The view from the Grand Canyon rim can be awe-inspiring at sunset. Crowds were lower than they will likely ever be again in my life due to COVID-19. On our last night there earlier this month we caught this sunset—smoke from a neighboring fire blew out as a band of thunderstorms moved through earlier in the day. It seemed like a real waste of a day since it rained and was cloudy but this end, combined with some ice cream cones for the kids made for a nice wrap up to our side trip on the way home.

Our recent adventure took us home through Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. This short hike to Pine Tree Arch was perfect for the kids and family while also being a little more out of the normal roadside stuff. Also, it was almost empty due to reduced crowds this summer. Photos from the rest of the trip coming for the next couple weeks.

On a recent hike in Texas I came across this collection of rock cairns that were more rock art at a main trail junctions. Roughly 100 sets were piled neatly where the trail diverged offering an interesting contemplation while we all stopped for some water and a rest.

Took a quick side trip while in Colorado yesterday to Rocky Mountain National Park. I’ve passed by here a few times but never visited. Cold and windy hike and it is still very much winter here but well worth the time and the cold.
