Defiantly, triumphantly, miraculously, and finally...August is HOME. After a 33 day long stay at Rady, Joni and I brought this healthy baby home after many bittersweet goodbyes between us and his care providers. He leaves the hospital breathing on his own without any support and an otherwise healthy, functioning body.
It’s hard to put into words just how strong August has been throughout the past month. After coming off of ECMO support, doctors are very careful to manage parents’ expectations given the wide range of long term outcomes. For one, it can take many weeks to months for babies to gain the strength to continue their recovery after such an intense procedure. August, however, apparently didn’t have time for all that. He went right to work shedding his need for oxygen and gladly taking up breastfeeding once given the chance. To say his recovery surprised his doctors and nurses is a complete understatement. We’ve heard more than once phrases like “he’s a medical miracle” or “in all my years on this job I’ve never seen a baby recover like this.” At every turn August found a new level of strength that was inspiring to all of us around him.
But beyond the medical milestones and past the miraculous rate of improvement lies perhaps the best part of all. August has, from the beginning, had a twinkle in his eye, and, eventually, a smile that has touched everyone who sees him. And I can’t help but think that what I’m seeing(what we’re all seeing) is him reflecting back to me how much he’s already loved. I’ve been telling him about it for weeks now! From mine and Joni’s hearts—thank you, thank you, thank you.
From here Joni and I step into, hopefully, more “normal” parenting things. August has a handful of follow-up appointments, and while his doctors are expecting him to have a fairly typical childhood from here, we just have to see how everything goes. As August goes, we go. But he’s already gone so far. -Vincent, Joni, & Baby August
