I’ve driven past probably a million of these small bushes. Maybe billions. Maybe not. Either way, if you ever traveled up and down the east Sierra at sunrise or sunset, it likely you’ve seen these back lit. The way they glow orange-ish and the shadows are a cool/ greenish blue has always been something that’s caught my eye. After a good rain up that way you can smell these. It’s thatching of sage that gets in to the cool, clean air. It will also do a number to your truck, traveling up and down chalk dirt roads.

Didn’t see anyone for a while on this morning. The road back into the main canyon in Zion had just opened and the sun was still relatively low in the sky. There was enough bouncing light to get the cliff walls really glowing without lighting up the snow too much. Zoomed in the bark even had a nice red to it. Suck a freaking cold day but it was so worth being out in.

I now know why people love Colorado. We were lucky enough to catch an early storm move over the mountains, leaving a dusting of fresh snow. We sat there as rain and wind rushed over the mountains, constantly using a cedar tree for some protection from the rain and then shooting more pictures as the trees were back lit from breaks in the clouds.
Southwest Colorado was absolutely stunning! We spent time on 10,500’ passes with views for miles of fresh, snow capped peaks, endless dirt roads lined with aspens and pine. Views of amazing ranches & farms but I felt the best part was how it’s still feels like “The West”. Next year we’ll be back in hopes of new views and further distant places.

We spent a decent anoint of time around 10,000’ in Southwest Colorado and there was so many great scene’s. We passed this one a bunch up and down one of the dirt roads we were on and I seceded to stop by once the direct light was off of it and I was pretty happy with how it looked once I found a good vantage spot. I really a ton of fog would’ve been the peak in moods but we can’t pick conditions just work with them. As for this one, it turned out very nice.

Not a soul around with us. The Smoky Mountains are packed with waterfalls like this.

Dappled Light in Utah. The second or third day we were out at the start of a two week road trip through Utah, Colorado & Arizona. A cloudy day east of Salt Lake with some rain coming and going made for some insanely good scenes from an over look we stumbled up.

The last bit of autumn was hanging on along the Blue Ridge Parkway when we made our way to North Carolina. The nice part about not being in these ares “past peak” are the areas of color separation. For me, the insane amount of color can be much and hard to find something that stands out amongst everything going on. Here, this tree totally stood out with the last bits of color barely hanging on. The Blue Ridge Mountains at twilight were blue, very blue. This picture was made from a longer distance away which actually helped bring the cooler shadows out rather than being closer to. Also it allows for scanning areas from viewpoints, opening up opportunities to see more than what’s directly in front of you.

What a memorable trip full of waterfalls, endless mountain vistas and colorful foliage.

I remembered shooting this one, I just didn’t realize it was in 2019. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I walked along this creek for hours trying to find what I thought was a composition that showed the creek and the aspens to compliment each other. This one seemed to work nice for an area with a little less turbulent water flow. The East Sierra isn’t know. Much for Autumn unless you live here but it’s a lil slice of heaven

My last trip to Zion saw snow, sun and some rain. Much of the park was pretty saturated and cold but it offered a pretty dynamic environment adding in reflective light, direct sun and shade mixed with the temperature swings depending on the elevation and exposed and non exposed areas. These leaves were in a pretty cold spot on the east side of the park. Much of the areas with standing water were frozen but the spots with sand were a bit warmer offering a little more than frozen leaves. I really like the dew that remained on the leaves, nestled in the little pocket.
