My old art teacher stacked her studio with National Geographic magazines from floor to ceiling. We often flipped through them when we were looking for inspiration; something to draw or paint. The smell of paint solvent in the air is still clear as day in my memory, just like it was every Saturday from 10am till noon.
I was very surprised when I saw someone flipping through one the other day.

The Laundry⁠
⁠You'd been staring at the dryer shake and rumble side to side for some time now, waiting for the buzz to go off, and signaling the return to a brief spring into action that would require taking out the clean clothes and putting in wet ones. They've been set and ready to go for the past 30 mins. You've run out of things to think about, that started with what to do for the rest of the day and somehow escalated to that song that you were trying to remember the other day but couldn't. Why did your phone have to die now?
A slight movement from the corner of your eye reminds you that there is someone else here, also waiting for the dryer to finish, also staring straight ahead. The thought that both of you are already flaunting your respective dirty laundry, yet not a single word has been exchanged between the both of you, is somewhat funny. When did we all collectively decide to be stuck in our own thoughts?

Well, you're either an open book or a mystery, you conclude.

The dryer buzzes.

The Journey. With us are Questions, Doubt and Fear. Questions is staring us blankly at our faces, always one or two steps above us, awaiting answers that will only satisfy it briefly. Doubt is like a pestilent child, who despite being small, has managed to plant itself on the ground; its clammy fingers wrapped tightly around one of each of our legs. It cries and cries and begs us not to go up the stairs... to the darkness above. Fear is out of sight. I should say, it's out of the periphery of our sight. But we know what it's doing. It's standing, leaning against the wall, arms crossed, in silence, staring. We feel the cold, burning gaze. Some say "Face your Fears!", but we cower at the thought of turning around to face Fear. What if it swallows us? But what if there's no one there? It's a 50/50 chance that we don't want to take. So we look Up, to the Darkness, inch by inch, to the Uncharted and to the Unknown.
