You can’t go wrong with respect and kindness, but surprisingly many people can’t get there. So much to learn but barriers need to come down.

We need to unify our country, not escalate the polarization. Regardless of what transpires this week, are you capable of constructive action? Can you embrace positivity? Or will you be amongst those who continue to fan the flames? What and how you use your voice matters greatly.

Making broad-stroked, blanket accusations about either party contributes hugely to the divide. Be better than that. Please.

The Listen Project was originally intended not as a political soapbox, but as a behavioral concept, a little push to fine-tune your radar and appreciate the nuances of effective dialogue. The current political climate just underscores this further, necessitating the need to rise above petty, derisive remarks. I'm aware these are exceptionally challenging times, but we have to aim higher.

Red or Blue, it doesn't matter to me. We will always have our differences and I respect that. What I do care about is perspective. Incidental or global? A lot of us want to move forward, but how do we go about it? Ultimately, what really concerns me is whether you use your voice to divide or heal this country.

Are people not listening to you? Consider your delivery. How you state your point matters greatly. Are you looking to offend and defend? Try clarifying and educating. Turn the volume down once in awhile and you may stand a better chance at being heard.

I try, I really do try, to nurture a conversation by first listening. I'm genuinely interested in what you have to say. I consciously inquire further into who you are, what your experience was, why you did that, what happened next, etc. I'll even acknowledge your perspective. Sadly, most of the time it's not a reciprocal experience. People are fueling up to reply with their alternate occurrence or anecdote. Many will do the one-up thing. Or they'll talk indefinitely about themselves without feeding the dialogue or directing any interest my way. I leave knowing more about them than they do about me. This accounts in part for why I share peripheral details of my life on social media to expose a few thin layers of a complex onion. I want to know you, but do you really want to know me? Or should we just continue to talk about you?
What's my point here? This post has nothing to do with being a gregarious or private individual. And though I share my experience, it's not about me. If someone engages you in conversation, remind yourself that true dialog is an art form. Listening plays a part, but what do you do with what you just heard?
