If you’ve lived in San Diego for any length of time, you know exactly what June brings: morning marine layers, cloudy skies, and our famous (or infamous) June Gloom.
Every year, I hear concerns from clients wondering if they should postpone their session because of the clouds. The answer is almost always no! One of the things I love most about photography is finding beautiful light in every season, and June offers more options than you might think.
If sunshine is your priority, we can head inland where the marine layer often burns off earlier in the day. If you’re drawn to a more modern, urban feel, downtown sessions are fantastic because the architecture, murals, and city textures become the star of the show—not the sky.
For families with little ones, lifestyle sessions at home are always a favorite. Your home tells your story, and these sessions capture authentic moments in a comfortable environment.
And speaking of beautiful locations, the Rose Garden is absolutely stunning right now. The blooms are gorgeous, the colors are vibrant, and it’s one of my favorite spots for family, maternity, and portrait sessions this time of year.
Of course, we can also choose to embrace the June Gloom. Those soft clouds create dreamy, flattering light and give beach sessions a peaceful, coastal feel that is uniquely Southern California. Some of my favorite beach images have been captured on overcast days.
