One of my favorite things about photographing families on a trail?

You don’t have to “pose.”

You just walk.

And when you walk, your kids naturally start doing what kids do.

They explore.
They pick things up.
They run ahead.
They come back.
They hold your hand.
They climb.

And I photograph all of it.

A trail session gives us movement, texture, beautiful light and a little bit of adventure.

And that’s exactly the kind of family photography I love.

Should you book a Mini Session or a regular family session?

Here’s my very unofficial guide:

Choose a MINI if you:
• Want updated family photos
• Have limited time
• Prefer a quick and easy experience
• Is on a budget
• Mostly want a handful of beautiful images

Choose a REGULAR SESSION if you:
• Want more variety
• Want time for your kids to warm up
• Want to explore a location
• Have a busy schedule
• Want lots of candid moments
• Want more images and different combinations of your family

Neither is “better.”

They’re just different experiences.

Nobody warns you about how quickly the little things disappear.

The way your child fits perfectly under your arm.

The way they hold your hand.

The messy hair.

The missing teeth.

The way they still want to be carried.

One day, those things will be gone.

That’s one of the reasons I love photographing families.

Not just the “big” moments.

The ordinary ones that you don’t realize are extraordinary until they’re gone.

A beach family session isn’t really about the beach.

It’s about what happens when you take a family somewhere they can actually MOVE.

We walk.
We run.
We play.
We sit in the sand.
We chase the waves.
We snuggle.
We laugh.

And somewhere in between all of that, I photograph the connection.

The beach just happens to make a pretty incredible backdrop.

San Diego makes my job pretty easy sometimes.

Your kids don’t have to behave perfectly for family photos.

Actually… please don’t ask them to. 😂

I don’t need everyone sitting still.
I don’t need perfect smiles.
I don’t need your toddler to look at the camera every single time.

I want the running.
The laughing.
The cuddling.
The silly faces.
The little moments between the “real” photos.

Because years from now, those are often the photographs you’ll love the most.

So bring your kids exactly as they are.
