In the forests of China, the dark morph of the Red Squirrel stands out with its deep brown to almost black fur. A bushy tail, sharp claws, and compact body make it well-suited for life in trees. Woodlands, conifer forests, and mixed forests provide the environment on which it relies.
Seeds, nuts, fruits, and fungi support its daily activity, often gathered and stored for later use. Agile climbing and quick jumps allow smooth movement between branches. Active behavior continues through much of the day, especially during cooler hours.
This species remains widespread across its range, with different color forms appearing in various regions. Survival depends on stable forest habitats that provide both food sources and safe nesting sites.
