Eating avocados like a can opener!

We didn’t realize there was an avocado tree off our balcony until this fellow came in for lunch. It was fascinating to watch how he used his tongue to roll the ripe avocado against his serrated bill. Then he crunched down gently to pop out the seed and swallowed the open fruit whole. Voila!

I’d employ at least two kitchen tools to do the same job and take twice as long… and I wouldn’t look half as handsome!

Since we are having so much fun with hummingbirds, let’s do another!

Formerly called the Magnificent Hummingbird — and I can see why! These are among the giants of the hummingbird world at 5 inches from tip to tail. They whizz by your head and sound like helicopters on a mission. The males are spectacular when they flash their faces just so. The females are significantly less flashy, but can hold their own in the beautiful garden of life.

Diamonds are prized for the way they refract light of the visible spectrum… so this little guy, imho, is a diamond with feathers!

He owned the bush beside our cabin window, so we were able to spend some quality time together. Yay me!

We came to Trogon Lodge in the Savegre Valley to see the Resplendent Quetzal… but we saw so much more!

Kindly allow me to introduce you to two of our neighbors: The Flowerpiercers.

These tiny little specialists have a curious bill tip — dramatically curved to pierce flowers at their base to extract nectar! (Let the hummingbirds go the long way with their long bills! These guys have a short cut to the goodies!)

They were constantly flitting around in the bushes beside our window, and sharing these beautiful orange blooms with the Fiery Hummingbird. Stay tuned!

FUNGtography will be having its second show in San Diego later this month!

NATURE! Embraced and Reimagined will be at the Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center from July 31 through September 9, 2022. The show will feature the photography and multi-media work of both Vivian Fung and Jessica Ballenger.

Vivian and Jessica will be hosting a reception at MTRP on Sunday July 31st from 2 - 4pm. Please come out if you can — it would be lovely to see you again!

NATURE! Embraced & Reimagined - FUNGtography Exhibition at San Diego's Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center has been POSTPONED.

Due to the temporary closure of the Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center in response to COVID-19, the original August 1 - September 11, 2020 exhibition date has been postponed to 2021. Exact date TBA. Details will be announced here.

FUNGtography is excited to announce that it has been selected by the MTRP Art Committee for an exhibition. The show - NATURE! Embraced & Reimagined - will feature the photography and mixed media work of two San Diego women artists, Vivian Fung and Jessica Ballenger.

Scheduled for August 1 - September 11, 2020.

Los Cuernos del Paine: A meditation in verse

Swift, sharp hammers from all directions,
The bitter Winter Wind chips away at odd angles,
His arsenal is ever sharp – and never forgiving.
Always sculpting down,
down,
down...
Banging, howling, pounding under cover of storm cloak.

“Wait – you missed a spot.”
“No. That is for Water.”

Spring.
Water chisels deceptively.
She floats gracefully and dances gingerly down the slope.
Soothingly, she curls through the crevices,
Leaping from rock to unsuspecting rock.
Water takes her ounce of flesh quietly.
Ice Melt.
Time watches.
A smirk. Jagged hooves standing sentinel.
“Nice work. What’s next?”
