Why do I donate my earnings from sessions to California Hands and Voices?

My son was identified as hard of hearing when he was 10 days old. As a hearing family, we had no idea where to begin. Does he need hearing aids? How do we get them? How much do they cost? Do we need to learn ASL and if so, how? What will his future look like?

Joining California Hands and Voices was the best thing we could've done to make the unknown feel less daunting.

Through the organization, we've met so many families like ours - hearing parents to hard of hearing children - and been able to learn from them: how to navigate IEPs and school systems and devices and communicating and finding mentors. We've seen that our son's life will be just as full and beautiful as any hearing child.

Everything I make from my fall micro sessions are going right back to California Hands and Voices, specifically to our Southern California Family Camp. Each child who attends the camp is grouped by age and each group has talented volunteers - mostly local high school and college students - who sign with the kids, treat them with dignity and respect, and facilitate connection. Each volunteer costs the organization $250, which the organization covers. By booking a micro session, you're helping to cover the cost of the volunteers.

So, thank you from the bottom of my heart for booking a micro session. For families like mine, like the one pictured here, we are so grateful for your support.

Every birthday, I make myself a birthday resolution. This year's was to trust my intuition.

A lot of last year was about protecting my peace, finding what makes me feel good and leaning into that while discarding what made me feel bad. For most of it, social media made me feel bad (hence the silence on this page). I leaned into connection, into community building. If something wasn't a "hell yes," it was a no.

While it was rising throughout 2025, it felt like 2026 ushered in a real rise to authoritarianism in the United States. People protecting others were murdered. Children were separated from their families for merely existing. And while none of this is new in America - we are a country founded upon the backs of slaves and groups of people have been forced into isolation time and time again based on their race or how they exist in the world - the fact that this is still happening in 2026, that people are openly and brazenly celebrating this, is beyond comprehension to me.

So, while I look at my child - my child who, in the time of N**i Germany, would have been targeted for persecution because of his own difference - I turn inward and trust my intuition.

My intuition tells me to trust my eyes, to believe what I see. My intuition tells me to listen and support the healers. It tells me to lean into compassion, to support those who may need a boost. It tells me to fight loud, to fight hard, to protect my peace and my community, in any way I am able. That may be a donation to the ACLU, that may be sharing resources, that may be finding a mutual aid fund to support.

But above all, my intuition tells me to love. It tells me to empathize, to protect those most vulnerable, to care deeply. It tells me to, even when it's hard, not look away.

It tells me to care deeply.
