I think it was back in 2003 I made my way downtown San Diego to see the construction of the new San Diego Padres baseball stadium. I had my Canon AE1 film camera with me. I remember wanting to capture some of the construction as I walked around the site.
I noticed a older hotel located across the way from what is now called Gallagher Square and made my way inside.
I was greeted by the desk clerk or concierge, whom I quickly acknowledged and let him know I was there taking photos of the construction of the new ballpark and would need access to the elevator for roof access. Almost without hesitation he gave the elevator and roof top codes.
I was amazed how easy that was.
I spent probably 30min to an hour on the roof watching the cranes and workers go about.
It want until last year watching a game at the stadium for the 20th anniversary of the opening of what became Petco Park that I wanted to find this set of photos I took during the construction. I took me a good 6 months to find prints and digital copies of them. So with that, here is a photo history of the one day at the building of Petco Park.
