Rumble in the Jungle....I mean riverbed. 😂

Another of series of shots of the two Snowy Egrets going at each other. I mean they really did not stop. As soon as the hit the ground from being in the air they went at it again. This is the most action I've seen from Snowy Egrets down at the San Diego River.

I thought they look like two fighters going at each other so I used the name of fight between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali back in 1974 in Zaire. For some reason that gets stuck in my head.

Egret Parcor

This pair of Snowy Egrets in the San Diego River got into a little beef yesterday over territory probably. The whole incident only took about 1 minute according to the clock in my exif data. Thankfully 30 frames a second gives you some leeway to find the shots you want. I was just trying to keep up with the action. I had no idea what I would see until I got back to my computer, it all just happens so fast.

I normally don't post so many pics in one post but I thought this was cool to see, I only wish I had this in slow mo video as well.

At the very end of this scuffle one Snowy Egret stood over the other with its foot on top of the others head and a couple other Snowy Egrets had flown over to the area to see what all the ruckus was about, only to have the victor chase all them out of that spot as well.

Sentinels of the Night Sky

The Milky Way stretches across the night sky above a group of Joshua Trees in Joshua Tree National Park.

I've shot several times in the past in Joshua National Park, but each time I was focused on well known rock formations. This time I wanted to focus on the trees themselves with the rocks in the back ground. There are plenty of trees to find but they tend to be found in the higher elevations of the west side of the park.

As Time Moves On

Stars trail behind the Desert View Tower in Jacumba San Diego.

The Desert View Tower was built in 1922 by Bert Vaughn, a San Diego real estate developer who owned Jacumba. Vaughn dedicated it to the pioneers, and highway and railroad builders who opened up the area.

Travel through the rugged In-Ko-Pah mountains had existed for centuries by existing Indian tibes. As settlers came into the area they began looking for ways to cut through the rugged mountains.
The first crossing in wheeled vehicles may have been the 1856 journey of Lt. E.B. Williston from San Diego, briefly through México, then up through Jacumba and on to Yuma

A historical plaque next to the Desert View Tower marks the site of the Mountain Springs Station, a stone house used in 1862-1870 as a store from which ox teams pulled wagons up a 30% grade. Beginning in 1915, the Old Plank Road connecting Yuma to southern California through the dunes provided additional assistance for making the crossing in motorcars. A new, 20-foot/6-meter-wide road with an asphaltic concrete surface constructed on top of a built-up sand embankment replaced the Old Plank Road upon its opening on August 12, 1926. The same roadway later became displaced by U.S. Route 80, itself since displaced by Interstate 8.

You can still see remnants of the old roads in the area. Reminders of the progress that led to the high speed Highway 8 that you are traveling on when you pass by the Desert View Tower.

I've had this image in mind for some time and decided to give it a try. Just like a month ago the only day that would work for me weather wise was a Friday evening where I had to go to work the next morning,...ugh! The next night clouds moved into the area.
I took blue hour photos of the foreground and then traveled up into the mountains to capture the star trails. The north star does line up behind the tower and I could have done star trails in the area but I wanted a much darker area to play with since this sits right next to a major highway, plus I wanted a better vantage point to possibly shoot the C/2025 R3 comet in the morning just before dawn. Even though the sky was darker in the Mt Laguna area, the amount of plane traffic coming overhead was a huge pain in the butt. I had to spend a long time getting ride of all the airplane and satellite trials in the sky image.

Almost

Almost a successful food transfer from the Peregrine Falcons at Torrey Pines. They move so fast its hard to see what you got until after the fact. The male comes flying along the cliff with a meal for the kids, he quickly transfers the food from his talons to his beak for easy transfer as the female comes rocketing in towards him and puts on her brakes and then gets into position. It all looks good until she has to let loose and try again, looking at it frame by frame it looks like the male just didn't let go in time, but the good news is she retried and then took the meal to the chicks in the nest. I did not include those pics because at that point she turns her back towards the camera and the pics and not as interesting.

Waiting to Launch

The Full "Worm Moon" rises up behind the top of the San Diego Mormon Temple.

The Worm Moon signals the end of winter and the start of spring as ground thaws and beetle larvae / earthworms emerge. It is also sometimes called the sap moon, crow moon, or sugar moon, referring to maple syrup tapping and bird migration.

I feel like this looks like a rocket ship getting ready for take off.

Love Birds

Happy Valentines Day.

A pair of Western Grebs together at Lake Hodges in San Diego.

Lake Hodges is a great spot to check out these birds, I was hoping to get some shots of these birds doing there famous rushing dance across the lake but to no avail, just means I need to go back and try again.

The Western Grebs are thought to be Western grebes are generally considered to be serially monogamous, meaning they form strong, exclusive pair bonds for a single breeding season rather than necessarily for life. They have elaborate courtship rituals, they are famous for their "rushing" ceremony, where pairs run across the water's surface together, and the "w**d ceremony," where they exchange nesting materials.
