So many businesses have come screeching to a halt in the last week, mine included. We are living in unprecedented times.
Personally I am struggling to separate my current emotions from memories of the last time my business came to a halt. Three years and 10 months ago to the date I had to clear my calendar, isolate from friends, and settle in for an unpredictable wait. I didn’t know if I would ever photograph an event again, let alone live through the year.
The experience of massive hemoptysis and listing for a heart-lung transplant was as dramatic as it sounds. My family changed travel plans, took time off work, and stocked up on medical equipment (also toilet paper, probably).
We learned that help arrives in times of crisis. A neighbor brought me books on photography; friends carried my oxygen concentrator and drove me to a winery to play card games; my dad’s coworkers sent cards, gifts, and the best minestrone soup I’ve had in my life; online donations flooded in to support our family.
Daily I am reminding myself that this is different from other times I’ve been forced to self-isolate: I’m not sick or dying or receiving treatment for organ rejection. I’m healthy and full of energy! My mind isn’t muddled by medication - I can concentrate, follow recipes, and cook all my own meals. I can breathe and hike to my neighborhood park, which happens to be named Corona Heights (attached photo is from Monday evening).
I will photograph events again, and this will pass.
I’m stretching my creativity and rolling out new products. That print shop I’ve always said I should make? It’s here: photos.kathleensheffer.com/prints. Kathleen Sheffer Photography gift cards? Here: squareup.com/gift/PXY4M1YBX2VSQ/order. You can even preorder my photography services and help me with the fixed costs of running my business: https://kathleensheffer.square.site/.
You can always help me by sharing this post or writing a review: g.page/kathleensphotos/review?mt
And I want to help, too! Social distancing is HARD. We need each other to get through this. Here’s what I’m offering right now:
1) Book a 30-minute video chat with me to stay sane: I’ll share photography tips, recipes, crisis coping strategies (this isn’t my first rodeo), and dark humor. calendly.com/ksphoto/30min
2) Let me help you connect with someone in your life. I have a photo printer at home that makes 4x6 prints, and a stockpile of cards, envelopes and stamps. Complete this form and I will mail a print of your choice with a handwritten note to whoever you like, for free. forms.gle/7wHnW9VWSo8BmPiU9 I’m calling it Images from Isolation. Spread love, from a safe distance.
Please, please reach out to me. I’m here for you. I have time and energy for you. Tell me how I can help.
