Each year, I dig through my family's photos from holiday seasons past, and it always brings back a warm feeling of togetherness. In the spirit of giving, Alive by Shooting is offering free 10-minute family photos to those who may not have this opportunity otherwise. I'll be stationed at Andrew Spinas Park in Redwood City on Saturday, 12/18 from 12-2pm. Simply show up dressed for photos, we'll do a quick shoot, and you'll get 10-edited family photos by Christmas!

It's always a bonus when I step out from behind the camera and find chemistry with the people I'm photographing. That was definitely the case from the beginning when I photographed Laura and Alberto a couple years ago for their engagement photos. We ended up chatting long after our shoot ended and joked that we'll see each other again when they're expecting. Well here we are. Chemistry still intact. And a beautiful child on the way.

I had barely gotten into professional photography when Peter and Cynthia took a chance on me to be their engagement photographer nearly 10 years ago. Now that their family has grown, it's become an annual occasion to see them all for their holiday family photoshoot. Yukari and her family had never been professionally photographed before, so when her sister gifted her a family photo package with me, I knew I had to rise to the occasion. When I delivered these photos to her, she replied, “It's like magic!” And I agree. I'm pretty confident in my abilities, but between unpredictable weather, chatting up children, and moving mile-a-minute, I don't always know how the photos will come out. Each time I see them in the editing stage, I always think the same thing, “It IS like magic!”

Even though I've devoted my career to capturing family memories, I don't actually have many photos of me as a kid. That's right, there exists zero pictures of Baby Thai. When I was a teenager, I started going to the local Walgreens and buying and developing disposable cameras--not to be a photographer but simply to document that which I wanted to remember...outings with my cousins, family celebrations, my nephews and nieces. The meaning and purpose of photography has always been rooted in family. A way to preserve one's legacy and pass on memories to future generations. It truly is an honor to be entrusted as someone's "family photographer."

As I plan my trip to Ireland, I not only think of the endless green hills, I think of driving manual on the opposite side of the car/road. Reminding myself that I've done it several times before, including a year ago in South Africa, and haven't dented any cars yet... 😬 🤞
