Pika Pika San Francisco

Pika Pika San Francisco San Francisco's First & Only PURIKURA Shop! Established in 2006, this family-owned business brings the pivotal piece of Japanese pop culture to you!

What is Purikura? Purikura, a Japanese term based off of "purinto kurabu," or "print club," refers to the current popular Japanese pop culture and art form that takes traditional photobooths to the absolute next level. Starting in 1995, this trend has spread to the rest of Asia. The experience: in the sedan-sized machine, take a 3-5 minute photo shoot behind 6-8 different green-screen virtual back

grounds. From popping out of a toilet; to riding an elephant; to sporting a sumo body; the possibilities are endless. After taking the photos, patrons go to one of the two "drawing stations" on the other side of the machine. Here patrons can digitally draw on & decorate their photos. Decorations include but are not limited to: changing eye/hair color, eye enhancers, costumes, wigs, pens of all types and colors, stamps, holiday/seasonal decor, etc.! Our machines are available to rent - from birthday parties to weddings, office parties to conventions. Call us for your quote today! Photos print out on a 4-by-6 inch sheet with a layout of your choice and they are STICKERS! Cut 'em, stick 'em, rock 'em. Pika Pika and Our Story

Pika Pika is a local, family-owned business in the Kinokuniya Mall in San Francisco's historic Japantown and greater Western Edition. It all started when Ryan Kimura - a fifth generation San Franciscan, fifth generation multi-ethnic Japanese-American, and community leader - came back from teaching in Japan. In Japan, he noticed the popularity of these sticker pictures among the high school students he worked with. It was in this moment that Kimura realized the importance of bringing these machines to America - to build bridges, to connect San Francisco's Japanese-American community to contemporary Japanese pop culture, to bring the fun to Frisco! The rest is history. Pika Pika has been featured in numerous blogs, the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Examiner, Thrillist, and the Bold Italic. In 2011, 7 x 7 featured Pika Pika as one of the "8 Solid First Date Ideas" in San Francisco.

The struggles of the Japantowns...

An eviction crisis is intensifying long-standing pressures on the historic neighborhoods — from displacement to urban renewal — and it could lead to their collapse.

We'll be going live with Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach to talk about the challenges within the Japantown Community during COVID. Feel free to watch the stream.

APILO has been instrumental in helping lead the way in supporting SF Japantown Small Businesses.

When it comes to the impact of Covid on our local businesses, our Asian ethnic neighborhoods have been hit harder than most. We take a close look at the impact shutdowns have had on Chinatown, Japantown, Little Saigon, SoMA, and beyond.

It is with an extremely heavy heart that we have made the excruciating decision to close Pika Pika. With the rise in cases and the likelihood that we will not be able to reopen in the near future there unfortunately isn’t a pathway forward for us to keep the business open.

We know many of you have supported us and other merchants in the savesfsmall businesses campaign, and we are sincerely grateful. Hopefully the ordinance will benefit the other small businessses in the jtown community and San Francisco. Please continue to support and shop local so that these businesses that have added to the uniqueness of the city have a chance to survive.

There aren’t quite words to describe the amount of gratitude we’ve had for all of you that have walked through our doors over the past fourteen years.

To the Jtown community - thank you for all the incredible support you’ve showered on us over the years, especially throughout this pandemic.

To our amazing staff, many of which have gone on to do incredible things - thank you for all that you’ve done to grow the shop and cultivate unique experiences for our visitors to Pika Pika (and for bearing with me).

To our Pika Pika family.... we’ve kept the shop open much longer than was financially viable because we’ve loved having the chance to serve all of you and being a part of your lives. It’s been an honor to see you at the shop for anniversaries, graduations, date nights and even see and have our booths at some of your weddings. We wouldn’t have made it this far without you and hate that we have to say goodbye like this. If we had to say goodbye we would’ve loved to have gone out with a big Pika party, inviting all of you to join us one final time at Pika Pika.

If any of you want to keep purikura alive and are interested in purchasing one of our photo booths (or know folks that might be interested) please send me a DM. We’ll be open for retail sales this month too.

I hope to still see some of you around jtown once the pandemic is over. We’ll also keep , our clothing line, so make sure to follow us and stay in touch. Till then, we’ll be holding on tight to our “memories that stick.”

🙏🏽 thank you!

WE WERE PI**ED and NEEDED TO UNLEASH CREATIVITY...⠀

Over the past few months we have rediscovered the many intersections and ties between the and communities. When Japanese Americans were incarcerated in concentration camps during World War II, some Fillmore residents watched over and took care of the personal belongings and property of the incarcerated Japanese Americans.⠀

Both communities have been ravaged by redevelopment and the highway known as Geary Blvd has provided a physical reminder of the attempts to divide our two communities.⠀

Though physical barriers may pose a challenge...they do not drown our #ちから (chikara=power).⠀

In fact out "intersection of power" is a reminder that our distinctly unique communities ⠀
HAVE, ⠀
DO, ⠀
and WILL CONTINUE ⠀
to lift each other up in a fight for justice 🔥.⠀

WE ARE THE DYNAMIC FUTURE,⠀

and like the lines that run through the City sky, our intertwined threads of history form the power grid of giants looking down upon us.🙏⠀
⠀..⠀
SokoSF Team members are fortunate enough to be a part of - "a coalition of San Francisco Japantown leaders working locally in the Western Addition to dismantle systemic inequity and promote economic and cultural sovereignty in the Fillmore and Japantown."⠀

Why do you shop local?⠀

At , we fight for local small businesses.⠀

Local small businesses are a key part of the larger community ecosystem. In particular, many of the local San Francisco Japantown & Fillmore small businesses owned by folks of color contribute to the uniqueness of the city's culture. Many of these businesses are barely hanging on and are in need of our ongoing support in these tough times.⠀

You all have proved to be great supporters of (let's keep it going)!⠀

Thanks to all of your energy, fire and support through the SaveSF Small Businesses Campaign we were all able to urge City leaders to provide some much needed relief for small businesses citywide during this pandemic. It was no easy task, but you all made it happen. ⠀

As we prepare for the holidays, here at SOKOSF we ask that you remember why you , and keep on being our true champions on this .⠀

Thank you for all of the love and keep it up!🙏⠀
