🎉Fannie Clarke came to San Francisco to go to college. Coming in on a ferry from Oakland and seeing the fog, she fell in love and knew she would live here permanently. Fannie bravely describes some of the discrimination she faced in her life when trying to get help for health issues and knowing she was not being taken seriously by her doctors. She is a straight shooter and “very opinionated” and she shares lots of her honest thoughts, for example on technology, “I couldn’t care less about computers.” , and on being an older person, “We don't want people to think that they have to make our decisions for us.”

❤️ Benson and Lisa Yip came from China to help support and care for Lisa’s parents, who were living in San Francisco. They describe their lives as ordinary, but describe joy in doing the things they love. Mrs. Yip has a passion for volunteering and gardening. They have made use of Zoom to keep active and exercising. The pandemic kept them indoors and more isolated, and so has the more present threat of violence and lack of safety.

Donald Matusen is a deep conversationalist and earned the nickname “the Professor” at a young age. He is from Chicago and because of his progressive interests, several people recommended San Francisco to him as a place he might enjoy. And living here he says, “every day is an adventure”. He is grateful for the many interests that started and were nurtured by his relationships: abstract art, hula dancing, singing, and meditation. Dating and finding new partners is something that motivates him to keep trying new things, and he shares some of the ups and downs of trying to date during the pandemic.

Mila Katsmazovskaia left Russia after facing discrimination and lack of opportunity because she was Jewish and sought asylum here. In San Francisco, one of the things she has loved the most is being a member of the Jazz Center and the opportunity to see live jazz, which is a passion of hers. In general, she likes the openness here, she “feels free”. She is also very grateful for the support services for older people and low-income people in San Francisco. She lives in an apartment building for older adults and has regular dates with friends for dinner in their apartments. She describes herself as “conservative” and having a good government is important to her.

Lee Ellen Shoemaker makes the most of San Francisco. She goes to her local bakery, Noe Valley Bakery, to meet new friends (and get the most out of the discounts they have in the afternoon- good tip!). She goes to the beach and Fort Funston to appreciate the beauty. Lee gets a tremendous amount out of the company of her friends and neighbors, but also enjoys her own company. She has been insatiably curious her whole life and an early adopter and teacher of new technology. Watch the full interview on our website: 80over80sf.org

Pat Jones, 82, came to San Francisco when she was 24 years old from London, with a brief stop in New York. As someone dealing with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, she gives advice that “if you want to live and you want to do some of the things that you want to do, you have to understand your limitations.” Listen to the full interview on our website: 80over80sf.org
