A couple of months ago I was approached by Senior Designer Teresa Diehl of Anthem to create some imagery for Terra Tech, one of their clients who recently rolled out a new brand, IVXX. The product? Medical Ma*****na.

420, named after the Waldos of San Rafael who met after school at a particular statue to smoke w**d at a particular time; 4:20 PM. Or, well, it’s evidently a great controversy (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-reddix/420-marijuana-term-waldo_b_3117984.html) as to how 420 came to be associated with pot-smoking.

It has been quite a few years since my days of smoking a bowl, but this project brought back some “hazy” high school memories, at the same time introducing me to the 21st century designer names such as; “Jolly Rancher” and “DJ Short Blueberry”. Makes me wonder, “Whatever Happened to MaryJane?”…

Photos capture the mechanical beauty of the mechanical calculator, a heavy device often about the size of a small computer that cost thousands in today’s dollars. They were indispensable tools used for the most complex business and engineering problems of the time.

Mari Andrews, an artist who often works natural objects into her sculpture and installations, has been collecting things off the ground while on hikes for almost 20 years. I have been to her studio on occasion and have always been amazed at the collection she has amassed: jars full of lichen, manzanita berries, cactus spikes, acorns, eucalyptus and cypress pods, soil from everywhere she has traveled, as well as a few from the nonplant arena such as newt skeletons, shedded cicada shells, snakeskins, her cat’s whiskers, petrified dinosaur dung and a hornet’s nest, just to name a few.

For me there is a kinship, as a collector of nature sourced elements for use in my own artwork, yet also a fascination with how varied and unique to the artist the end results can be. There is a similarity in that we both showcase the often unobvious beauty of the things nature has left behind, yet that variable we call creativity still allows each artist to infuse his or her own unique talents and end up with a piece singular to them.

For the past 2 years I have been wanting to schedule a shoot at Mari’s studio, and recently I was finally able to spend an afternoon photographing some of her collection. Here are a few shots from that visit.

Working with Marc Lineveldt, Executive Creative Director at Fitzgerald + Co., we shot & edited this video for his client, Bass Egg. I hear the ladies on the View will be showing off the product during the show on Aug 6th.

The PRO-Keds sneaker is such classic footwear that some people who grew up wearing them talk about them as nostalgically as the first car they ever owned. This love for the PRO-Keds inspired me to collaborate with stylist Dylan Difranco, to tell a story about a fictional character through his dedication to his PRO-Keds. We start off when he is a teen in the mid-70's and follow him through the 80's, 90's and into the new millennium, with snapshots of his environment showing the omnipresent sneakers, suitable for any stage of his life.
