Ollie and Thomas came to the studio on their way to be married by their best friend at SF City Hall. They were lights from Austin, Texas, amidst so much darkness in the news from that state - the tragic shootings in Uvalde, the myriad legislation passed banning abortions, denying health care to trans youth, prohibiting teachers from discussing critical race theory, the list goes on. Happy pride and to continuing the work against discrimination and towards justice and empathy 💜

Photographing at the studio is part of what keeps my spirits afloat through some challenging times (in the world and personally). This session with Jess and Shanna was a great reminder of being supports to one another - as artists and as human beings as we move through rougher times. Both and .strauss are beautiful artists who work independently and collaboratively (often on large scale public and community works), and they have an upcoming fellowship . Check out their work! (or see it huge on a building near you⚡️)

This is the 16x20” silver gelatin print from an 8x10 collodion negative that I’m donating to fundraiser (link in bio!) It is the corner of Mission and Geneva taken in 2015, (with the old Bravo Pizza sign) across from my tintype portrait studio. The circle around the image is made by the condenser in the enlarger, and it reminded me of the way I had installed another collodion negative (viewed as a positive) for my Geneva show . I couldn’t part with the negatives, but wanted to make prints available from them. I have felt supported by this corner and have come to rely on it- the last image is a rainbow on Geneva from last year- something that everyone who saw it for that fleeting moment got to experience together.

Excited to donate work to (FX) youth photo mentoring program’s fundraiser! Being an FX mentor was the ‘gateway drug’ for me to discover teaching photography, that I loved seeing what comes out of young people’s minds, and that there is always so much to learn from the process of teaching. Link is in my bio to purchase silver gelatin prints from me, and ! (Thanks for taking this photo back in 2004 of our trip to Thrasher magazine!) @ Thrasher Magazine

Missing shooting in the studio! Have been grateful thinking about the many wonderful people I’ve met through it (like Jasmine here), and all the life circumstances that bring them to want to do a portrait. That was the whole reason I opened the studio 6 years ago. I took a break from posting a lot this year (portraits and otherwise) cause well it was a rough year, but having to be present with folks during the sessions ended up being a real gift. I have no idea what will happen regarding the economy, small businesses, and a system with such big cracks for its people to fall through, but wanted to thank those who have bought gift certificates and checked in. At the very least I’ll be shooting gift sessions when we’re able to share space again! Trying to stay positive (especially today! 😉 ❤️

I learned that Essie Webb-Jones passed away earlier this year at the age of 102 (1917-2020). Her words inspired the balloon mural that is on the big grain elevator in the Bayview. Talking about community suffering in Hunter's Point in 1969- she’d said: "the balloons may have fallen to earth and lost their air, but they will rise again". I think of her quote each time I pass that mural (off Amador St), and feel fortunate to have met and photographed her in her garage for 's story on the 1966 Riot in Hunter's Point - The Fire Last Time. She was 98 at the time and full of energy and love. (The mural is called Bayview Rise by Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan).
