May 1 isn’t just another day — it’s May Day 2026.

A day rooted in the long fight for workers’ rights, born out of the struggle for the eight-hour workday, and still a symbol of labor solidarity around the world.

At ILWU Local 10, the union meeting was held on May Day.

The hall took time to honor Willie Dixon, plug No. 3007, one of the oldest living members of the union. Ahead of his 107th birthday on May 3, he was presented with a plaque recognizing his place in ILWU history.

Members reflected on Dixon’s words shared in the hall — a reminder of an older tradition on the waterfront. He spoke about looking out for fellow workers, and how if he saw a brother who hadn’t been working, he would step aside and give up his own job so someone else could work.

Forty-four Class B members were also promoted to Class A status — a major step in their working lives and access to steady work.

After the meeting, members headed to Embarcadero Plaza in San Francisco, across from the Ferry Building, for a May Day rally.

Unions in attendance included the Inlandboatmen’s Union, SEIU, and ILWU members across classifications. Signs, banners, and flags filled the space.

Different unions. Same message: solidarity.

Protesters gathered at the intersection of University Avenue and San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley as part of nationwide “No Kings” demonstrations opposing Donald Trump. Similar protests were held in major cities across the United States.

Crowds filled the streets carrying handmade signs, chanting, and engaging in peaceful demonstration throughout the afternoon. Many participants displayed highly personalized and creative messages reflecting a range of political views and concerns.

Ceiling Collapse Reported at Berkeley Check-Cashing Business

BERKELEY, CA — March 5, 2026.

Notifications from the Citizen app around 10:15 a.m. reported a person trapped inside a check-cashing business near 2005 San Pablo Ave in Berkeley.

Responding to the scene, police and fire crews had closed the block while assessing the situation. From outside the storefront, debris from a fallen floating ceiling could be seen inside the business. Early information at the scene varied, with some reports suggesting a roof collapse before it was clarified that the interior ceiling had partially fallen.

According to Berkeleyside, one woman was injured and transported to a hospital following the incident.

Images document the emergency response and conditions at the scene.

Jurisdiction Dispute Halts Work at Redwood City Port

REDWOOD CITY, CA — February 2026.

During dispatch, leadership of International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 10 addressed concerns that outside workers performing scrap-loading operations within established waterfront jurisdiction would impact approximately 40 longshore positions. Members were informed that the work falls under Local 10 jurisdiction under existing agreements.

Later at the Port of Redwood City, members halted operations after determining the work was being performed by members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

The workers moved to standby positions on the vessel ramp. When photographed, several covered their faces before relocating behind a fenced area. As they passed longshore members, a verbal exchange occurred between individuals from both groups.

Regarding the matter of jurisdiction: their work is confined to the yard. They cannot work the port side. They would not accept it if we performed their work — so the same standard applies in defense of our jurisdiction.

Thirteen images document the sequence of events as it unfolded on the waterfront.

Solidarity. Jurisdiction. Enforcement.
