Point Reyes had been on my bucket list for a long time, so when Emma and Sean booked their session there I showed up five hours early to scout and plan. I wanted to know every corner of that place before they arrived.

I’ve always used cinema to inspire my work, but lately I’ve been leaning heavily into it and this location felt like the perfect place to go all in on that.

Then the deer showed up.

Emma and Sean mentioned that deer have kind of become a theme for them lately. They saw deer touring their venue, we saw them multiple times during the session (one even snuck into the background of the final car shot, and their wedding is at Deer Park Villa, so at this point the deer are basically invited.

Every prompt I gave them they took and made completely their own. Their love for each other is the kind you can just feel. By the end of it I was exhausted, but the good kind. The kind where you drive home knowing you made something that’s going to matter to these two for the rest of their lives.

Where the Deer Roam. Coming soon.

When Jazmin and Omaid first reached out, they noticed I had photos from Humboldt and realized that’s one of my home bases. Since they visit Humboldt all the time and it holds such a special place in their hearts, they decided to bring their session there. I love when that happens.

Eureka Books was their idea and honestly one of the best calls they could have made. Every time they visit Humboldt they stop in and walk away with at least one more book. You could feel that connection the whole time we were there.

The variety between the Arcata Community Forest and the bookstore gave us something really special. Two completely different feels, both totally them.

I felt so tuned in for this session. Everything just flowed. Right up until the very end when I somehow missed my holster and watched my camera slam into the ground, lens mount coming loose on impact.

I picked it up, assessed the damage, swapped to a different lens, and got the last shot anyway.

Lens is off getting repaired and a rental is ready for this weekend. I’m just thankful I have insurance.

The photos though? Worth every bit of it.

I’d done leg day a couple days before this. So when I showed up early to scout and ended up covering over 7 miles combined between scouting and shooting, most of it pretty steep, my legs were definitely feeling it by the end.

In true Dan fashion I’d been to Sue-meg multiple times but still wanted to walk it fresh for Sabrina and Jakob’s session. Come up with a plan, find the best spots for the light and the location. That’s just how I do it.

We started at Wedding Rock, one of Sabrina and Jakob’s favorite spots, and since we had two hours I suggested we make our way down to Agate Beach to change it up.

By the end of it I was absolutely cooked. Legs were done. No regrets though.

Sabrina and Jakob showed up and absolutely nailed it. The location, the light, the two of them together. Worth every single step.

Even the ones that hurt.

Took a little break and it was exactly what I needed.

Comparison is something I have to actively work against. When you’re scrolling through other photographers’ work it’s easy to forget that you’re seeing someone at a completely different point in their journey than you. Different experience, different path, different client base. You’re not seeing the years of work that got them there, you’re just seeing the highlight reel.

So instead of getting stuck in that spiral, I try to use it as fuel. What can I take from that and make my own? That’s a much more productive headspace.

The same goes for couples in the thick of wedding planning. You get so focused on the details, the vendors, the timeline, the seating chart, that your relationship quietly takes a back seat. Don’t let that happen.

Your wedding day is a celebration of your relationship. Make sure that relationship is still being nurtured leading up to it.

Comment below what you ended up doing for your date night. I want to hear it.

The wedding is one day. Your relationship is everything after it.
