The month of August is the best period to see Karl, the low fog rolling trough San Francisco and the West side of the Bay Area. Most European tourists are surprised by how cold San Francisco is in August, and Karl is the cause of the chilly summers.
The fog is caused by the cold wind off the Pacific Ocean, which hits the heat of inland California. As the hot inland air rises, the cool ocean breeze off the Pacific replaces it, creating the fog effect. This flow of air to the low-pressure zone over Northern California's Central Valley pulls the fog through San Francisco.
Mt Tamalpais is definitely the best possible spot to witness this phenomenon.
This is a collection of shots that I took from the top of Mt Tam, on one of those (rare) evenings with low fog and clear skies.
In the album there is also a bonus shot that was taken the night in which the Neowise comet was visible over the Bay Area.
Feel free to share the album if you like the photos!
