A year ago this month, I made the transition to full-time photography. When I take the time to reflect on the last year, I have to say there's noooo way I could have expected the opportunities and blessings that would occur in that time. There have been ups and downs, but all of the hard times make the good times that much more spectacular.
I wanted to take a moment to share this photo that I was hesitant to share when I first took it. A couple hours before this photo was taken, Nipsey Hussle had just been shot. I was asked last minute to photograph this Joe Budden live podcast at The Fox Theatre, and in the middle of it, Joe took a moment of silence for his newly fallen friend, Nipsey. Everyone on stage cried together.
My hesitation in sharing this photo came simply from the fact that I didn't fully understand the weight and tragedy of the loss of this human. I didn't want to share a photo just to get on the bandwagon of something I didn't fully understand.
Now, 5 months later, I see who Nipsey was, and his importance, not just in the hip hop community, but as a leader and role model for every underrepresented group here in the U.S.
Being here, in this moment, looking back at the importance of a photo like this, and the PURE CHANCE of my being there in that moment, I realize fully how important the work I am doing is:
It's more than just content, it's more than likes, and shares, and followers. It's truly documenting this time period, here and now, for the next generation of people to see the work being done to further the steps for those to come.
I am grateful for my community, mentors, friends, family, and everyone believing in what I am doing and continuing to support my work.
Thank you, truly.
