Back-to-back weddings lately… and somehow I’m tired and grateful at the same time.
I’ve been second shooting quite a bit, and I honestly love it. There’s something about showing up without having to lead the day and just getting to watch, notice, and photograph all those little things in between. And I have been thinking about how many places weddings have taken me. Different cities. Random little towns. Beautiful venues tucked somewhere I probably would’ve never known existed. Long drives with way too much caffeinated drink. Coming home late with tired feet, full memory cards, and probably a few rolls of film in my bag. It’s kind of crazy that this little camera has given me a reason to see so many places and be part of so many people’s stories. Some weekends are a blur, but beautiful stories have been told…

DOUBLE EXPOSURE…One frame, Two moments…a little bit if magic…

Soft on soft.Romantic. Dreamy. A little unexpected.
And that’s what I love about double exposures in wedding photography.
They’re not about documenting exactly what happened.
-
A little tip: choose two frames that complement rather than compete. Think portrait + florals, silhouette + architecture, or movement + texture.
Keep one image visually simple and let the other add the story. Because sometimes one photograph just isn’t enough to hold the whole feeling.

None of these are shot on film, they’re digital. And maybe that’s exactly why I love them. Somewhere along the way, I stopped wanting my digital work to look “digital”. I wanted it to feel like the photographs I love most…those shot on film…soft, a little nostalgic, true to the moment, beautiful without being perfect.
So, when I shoot digital, I approach it with a lot of the same intention. I look for layers.I let people move through my frame.I wait for gestures instead of forcing them. I leave a little room for imperfection. And I edit for feeling before I edit for perfection. Regardless of the medium I use, though I definitely love to pick my film camera first all the time, I still want the photographs to feel like me:)
It is not my goal to make my digital images pretend to be film…the goal is to create a cohesive body of work that you stop caring how the image is created but instead, recognizing who made the photograph.

Open letter to my firstborn Jeri Abenina

Dear Jeri,

Wow, 28!!!!

You were the one who made me a mom. The first person who taught me a kind of love I never even knew existed, the kind that changes you completely and stays with you forever.

We are incredibly proud of you, not just for your accomplishments, but for the person you’ve become. Your heart, your strength and the beauty you carry inside and out.

Although sometimes we have our differences, because what mother-daughter doesn’t, please don’t mistake those moments as bigger than what they are. Underneath it all is love that is constant, fierce and unconditional.

No matter how old you get or how far life takes you, I hope you always know that you have a home in me where you can come home exactly as you are, where you always belong and always loved.

There’s something special about you being my first. We grew up together in so many ways, you were learning how to live in this world and I am learning how to be your mom. We figured it out together, beautifully and imperfectly.

Happy Birthday My Firstborn.
I hope you see yourself the way I see you…beautiful, capable,strong, worthy and so deeply loved. You will forever be one of the most beautiful parts of my life.

Looking through these from our last visit and realizing it’s never really the big things I miss.

There’s a kind of beauty in the simple life back home that I don’t think you fully appreciate until you’re away from it.

Nothing needs to be polished. Nothing needs to be impressive. Life just happens… a little messy, a little slower, and somehow full of so much character
