In the Round of 32 of the MLS NEXT Cup, Bay Area Surf end the game with 3–0 defeat to N Virginia Alliance, The match featured several pivotal referee calls that shaped the outcome, including the disputed corner preceding the opening goal and the uncalled handball in the buildup to the second.
Surf started brightly and generated several promising moments in the opening stages, including an early chance for Nyeem and a saved effort from Sebastian. The match remained scoreless until the 34th minute when NVA opened the scoring from a corner kick. The sequence began with a ball that appeared to go out off an NVA player before the restart was awarded as a corner rather than a goal kick, and NVA capitalized on the ensuing set piece.
NVA doubled the lead early in the second half after winning possession during a transition sequence that included a handball by an NVA player which was not called. Moments later, they converted the opportunity to make it 2–0. Surf continued to battle, but NVA added a third goal in stoppage time to seal the result.
Although the loss ended Surf’s championship-bracket run, the team remained in Salt Lake City with showcase matches still to come. The match served as another opportunity to measure themselves against elite national competition on the MLS NEXT Cup stage
