Is that "identification app" on your phone actually a global scientific revolution? 📱🌿

Many people use iNaturalist to settle a trail-side debate about a wildflower. But behind that "Identify" button is a massive shift in how we can save the planet.

I sat down with Scott Loarie, Executive Director of iNaturalist.org, to talk about how your backyard and trailside photos are:

=> Fueling a global community science dataset that experts actually rely on. 📊

=> Transforming "casual observers" into powerful environmental stewards.

=> Changing the face of conservation technology forever. 🌍✨

=> And also, how their version of "AI" works, and if resource consumption is a concern.

Your snapshots aren't just photos—they’re data points for hope.

Discover the true power in your pocket.

What if I told you the world’s most "barren" places are actually some of its most vital? 🧂💧

Most of us underappreciate Salt Lakes—seeing them as salty voids rather than the life-sustaining wonders they are. From uniquely adapted species to the massive migratory bird "airports" they provide, these landscapes hold stories we can't afford to lose.

I sat down with Caroline Tracey , author of Salt Lakes: An Unnatural History (from . W. Norton & Company) , to uncover:

Why these "unnatural" histories are actually the key to our future.

The surprising human stories etched into the salt crust.

Why there is still profound hope for these ecosystems in peril. 🕊️

From 6 billion to almost zero. 📉 The story of the Sunflower Sea Star is one of the most dramatic shifts in our oceans—but it’s not over yet. ✨

The Sunflower Sea Star saw its populations drop from 6 billion (!!) to about 500 million—a 90-95% drop. 🆘 Some areas have seen a devastating 99% loss.

As a keystone species, losing these stars has led to the collapse of vital kelp habitats. 🌊 However, we finally have a breakthrough! In recent months, the primary cause of Seastar Wasting Syndrome has been identified, and the cutting-edge work at the Sunflower Star Laboratory is creating real hope for recovery. 🔬🧬

🎧 Listen to our latest episode with Reuven Bank and Andrew Kim from the Sunflower Star Lab for an essential dose of marine hope!

Liam O'Brien's metamorphosis from stage actor to butterfly artist and lepidopterist is nothing short of extraordinary. And I recently had the great pleasure of spending time behind the mic with Liam, discussing his new book, Butterflies of the Bay Area and (Slightly) Beyond. 🦋🦋

We talk all-things butterflies, and while we get into the weeds of some California species and places, there is plenty to offer listeners everywhere. His story is remarkable, and the lessons of butterfly observation apply no matter where you live.

Thanks to , and himself.
