There were multiple fires burning in the Yosemite National Park area, starting in the summer of 2020 and into the Fall. Although by October, it was safe to drive into the park, the haze was still evident. Yosemite has always been my go-to place for beauty and inspiration, as well as never-ending photographic subjects, so off I went on a day drive there. In the late afternoon, the Sentinel beach area started to glow with the lowering sun setting off the haze in front of the granite rocks. The golden leaves reflected in the water and deer started to peek out for their evening meal amid the quiet. I quickly took some cell phone shots before I set up my tripod and enjoy the beauty and solitude of the moment. The moment merged into a serene, iconic memory.

Today's design reminder: one of the easiest ways to create a cohesive space is by paying attention to tone rather than theme.

A warm wood frame paired with warm wood floors, or artwork with cooler tones in a room that already leans cool, can instantly make a space feel more intentional.

Nothing has to match perfectly. Wood grains don't need to be identical, and neither do the colors throughout your room. Simply deciding whether your space feels predominantly warm or cool is a great place to start.

And don't be afraid to mix in the opposite tone here and there. A little contrast often adds the interest that makes a room feel complete.

Can you guess where these ripples came from? I saw them and became mesmerized. I just wanted to stop my walk, stare and take them in. I was walking around Lake Merritt in Oakland, which can be both beautiful and sad, at times. But then this happened. I had to find the right spot to photograph the whole effect. Although these were tall buildings reflected as ripples in the water, it transported me somewhere else, like a cityscape without the city, or an African artisan’s weave into a blanket. I loved the variation of soft colors and flowing lines, spread like fluid paint on water, and I’m glad to have noticed.
