Still learning. Still practicing. Still chasing the perfect dive.

This juvenile Osprey is learning the art of hunting, testing its wings and honing the skills it will need to become a master hunter.

Watching a bird of prey like this young Osprey develop its hunting instincts is one of the most rewarding parts of wildlife photography.

Nothing prepares you for the sheer power of a humpback whale lunge-feeding right off the Northern California coast. The water began to boil with anchovies, seabirds swooped in by the hundreds, and seconds later, this giant exploded straight up through the chop in Pacifica.
You can clearly see the ventral pleats expanded and the baleen plates filtering thousands of gallons of water in a single mouthful . Moments like this remind you just how wild the Pacific really is just steps from shore.

Nature’s ultimate aerial hijack. 🦅⚡️

I set out to photograph an Osprey locking onto a dive to hunt fish. Instead, I witnessed pure coastal drama: an audacious Western Gull swooped in, aggressively tailgating the raptor and harassing it from directly above.

With the gull hovering inches off its back, the Osprey was completely thrown off its line, breaking off the hunt mid-air. Swipe through to watch the interception unfold frame by frame—especially the moment the gull looks like it’s attempting a mid-flight piggyback ride!

🚨 DINNER IS SERVED! 🐟 And the dining room just got LOUD.
I spent time watching this Osprey family, and the anticipation in the nest was palpable. Swipe through ➡️ to see the amazing sequence I captured when mama finally delivered the goods.

You can almost hear the juveniles screaming for food in the shots! I was thrilled to catch the exact moment she landed with that impressive catch, and then again as she mantled over it to feed her hungry brood. Nature is incredible. 🦅

The sheer scale of the cosmos above Mount Shasta. ✨ Witnessing the Milky Way core glowing over the peak is an unforgettable experience.
I often get asked how much of the night sky is visible to the naked eye versus what the sensor captures. Swipe left to see the unedited RAW file straight out of the camera to see the difference!

💡 Quick Astro Tip: Nailing focus in the pitch black can be tricky. I always switch my lens to manual focus, use the live view magnification on my Sony a1 or a7iv to zoom in on the brightest star I can find, and carefully adjust the focus ring until the star is a pinpoint of light.

Chasing alignments in Santa Cruz 🌕🌊
There is nothing quite like watching a massive moon crest over the horizon, but getting it to line up perfectly with Walton Lighthouse makes it even more special. The transition from the dusty pink skies to the deep twilight blue completely changed the mood of the scene minute by minute.
