One of the biggest challenges I face as a photographer, especially working in a more candid, documentary style, is finding the balance between natural interaction and gentle direction. When moments are unfolding organically and Iā€™m simply observing and capturing, it can be tricky to decide when and how to step in with posing.

For this particular sequence, I started with a simple prompt: I asked the older brother if he could crouch down. As youā€™ll see in the first image, he followed direction perfectly. I then invited the younger brother to join him, allowing the moment to evolve naturally from there.

As the series progresses, you can begin to see their dynamic shift less about the pose, and more about their connection and personality coming through.

And thenā€¦ can you tell what happened between images three and four?

Yep, you guessed it. Big brother gave little brother just the slightest shove and knocked him overā€¦and thankfully, these playful boys just giggled away.
