Deep in the Selkirks, somewhere beyond the end of the road, we found this quiet little lake.

Just a good friend, a couple of backpacks, and an evening spent wandering through the wilderness.
There’s something almost mystical about places like this....untouched, quiet, and waiting for whoever is willing to make the journey.

This is what I love about public lands. There are still places where you can wander deep into the wilderness and feel like you’ve stepped into another world.

I've wanted to photograph the Milky Way over the Palouse for a long time. Usually, that would mean driving an hour and a half to find an old abandoned house, barn, or some other interesting subject to put underneath it.

But this trip was different. We were taking things slow, enjoying the time away, and I didn't really feel like chasing a specific subject.
So we stopped in the middle of the wheat.

No old barn. No farmhouse. No lone tree.

Just the wheat stretching toward the horizon with the Milky Way rising above it.

And honestly, I think this tells the story of the Palouse better than some of the more iconic scenes ever could. The old barns and rolling hills make for great photographs, but most of the time, this is what you actually see when you're driving through the Palouse.......endless fields of wheat beneath a huge sky.

After weeks of smoke and fires hanging over North Idaho, we decided it was time to get out of town for a few days.
The forecast wasn’t exactly promising, and we weren’t sure what the smoke would be like in the Palouse. But we knew we’d have a good time either way.
Thankfully, the smoke stayed mostly out of the way. You could see a little haze hanging on the distant horizon, but it never really affected the trip.

We spent our time driving the backroads, talking, stopping whenever something caught our eye, and just enjoying being out there. No rushing around trying to photograph everything. Just a good friend, good scenery, and a few days to chill.
Then, as the evening rolled in, the wheat fields caught the last of the golden light.

This trip wasn't about photography, the camera almost stayed home, but I couldn't help myself! Before visiting Missouri...

This trip wasn't about photography, the camera almost stayed home, but I couldn't help myself!

Before visiting Missouri, I honestly had no idea what to expect. Coming from North Idaho, my definition of "flat" is probably a little different, but I quickly realized that landscapes don't need towering mountains to be interesting.

I found quiet forests, ancient trees, beautiful textures, fresh spring greens, and countless scenes that rewarded anyone willing to slow down and really look.
These are just a few moments I captured in the short time I was there. Now I can't help but wonder what I could create if I came back with nothing on the agenda except exploring, waiting for good light, and chasing the towering supercells that roll across the Midwest.

I don't think I ever feel smaller than when I'm standing beneath a sky full of stars.

All the worries, insecurities, and problems that seem so overwhelming during the day suddenly feel insignificant against something so unimaginably vast!
It's one of the reasons I keep coming back. Not because I'm chasing another photograph, but because these quiet nights remind me what actually matters. They remind me that life is bigger than the things that weigh us down, and that sometimes the best thing we can do is simply look up.
Maybe that's the real gift of the stars...not making us feel small, but helping us see everything else in its proper scale.

We spent the evening watching the sky slowly change as storms rolled across the horizon. Every few minutes the colors shifted, the clouds took on a different shape, and the whole landscape felt alive.

We hung around hoping the weather would clear long enough for the Milky Way to make an appearance, but eventually the rain won.

Honestly, I didn't mind.

Some of my favorite parts of the trip weren't even the photos. They were the conversations on the hike, laughing about nothing, and watching another sunset with good friends. Before we knew it, it was time to head home.

The only thing I would've changed is having a little more time.

There’s something surreal about standing in the middle of the Idaho desert at 4am, watching the Milky Way rise over the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America.

This photo was taken at Bruneau Dunes State Park in southern Idaho....a place that feels completely different once the sun goes down. The park is home to an observatory and some of the darkest skies in the state, making it one of the best places in Idaho to experience the night sky.

One of my biggest goals this Milky Way season has been to create cleaner, more detailed night photos, and this photograph feels like a step in that direction. The wind-carved textures in the sand, the silence of the desert, and the galaxy stretching overhead made this one a night I won’t forget anytime soon!

"The Rock Hugger"

This tree looked like it was hanging on as tight as it could, wrapping itself around these boulders just to stay standing.

and I weren’t supposed to be here..
plans changed, grabbed the dogs, and went searching for something new.

One of my goals this year has been to create stronger woodland images,
and this felt like one of those moments worth slowing down for.

Turns out this whole area got torn up by the winter floods…
but standing there, it felt like a reminder...sometimes holding on is what keeps you standing.

Not every shot comes easy.

I spotted this scene from the other side of the creek and knew it was there… just out of reach.
So we pushed upstream, looking for a way across.

I still ended up with wet feet.
But sometimes that’s the cost of chasing a feeling you can’t quite explain.

Im grateful to have friends who are always down to change plans, wander off trail, and chase light into places like this.
