On June 24th, 2025, the waters of Scorpion Anchorage off Santa Cruz Island offered a striking example of how science and recreation thrive side by side within National Marine Sanctuaries. SCUBA divers from the University of California, Santa Barbara, aboard the R/V Shearwater, carried out Marine Protected Area monitoring to support the conservation of local ecosystems, while kayakers paddled through the same kelp forests and sea caves as part of environmental tourism in Channel Islands National Park and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. This scene, captured in the attached photograph with Anacapa Island rising in the background, highlights how National Marine Sanctuaries accomplish their mission by protecting marine resources through scientific research and fostering connections to these remarkable places through sustainable recreation.
