Katie’s Becoming session had a very different energy from the start.

We leaned into tension, restraint, vulnerability, and the kind of emotion that doesn’t always translate easily into words. Then, as the session moved forward, the feeling in the images began to change. There was more softness, more steadiness, and a sense of coming back into the body.

That arc is part of what makes Becoming so meaningful to me. It allows the photographs to be more than simply beautiful. They can explore something, hold something, and leave room for interpretation.

Photographing dancers is one of those things that never stops being fun for me.

They already understand movement in a way that gives us so much to work with—the shape of a line, the strength in a jump, the softness of a hand, the way emotion can live in a single gesture.

That’s why I created For the Love of Dance.

Two of my greatest loves are empowering kids and teens and photographing dance, and this experience brings both together. I want your dancer to feel beautiful and powerful in their own skin while we create portraits that reflect not only their skill, but the passion and personality behind it.

I care about technique, too. We’ll look at images as we create them so your dancer can make sure the photograph reflects the movement they had in mind, whether their strength is jumps, extensions, or something entirely their own.

For the Love of Dance is open to dancers ages 6–18, at every skill level and in every style of dance.

The $690 experience includes a planning consultation, professional hair and makeup, access to my studio wardrobe, a fully guided portrait session, and two finished portraits.

Over the years, I've had the privilege of meeting women who have trusted me with some of the most meaningful seasons of their lives, and many of them have become people I genuinely think about long after they've left my studio.

Some of my favorite concepts are the ones that ask me to slow down.

This evening certainly did.

Nothing about it was hurried. Every flower was placed by hand. The fabric was adjusted more times than I can count. We spent most of the evening chasing a feeling rather than trying to create a specific photograph, and I think that's why I love conceptual work so much.

People often ask where these ideas come from, and I never have a simple answer. Most of the time they don't begin as pictures at all. They begin as a mood, a color, a piece of music, or a feeling I can't quite explain. Everything else grows from there.

As summer begins to wind down, I'm feeling especially grateful for the evenings I've spent creating outdoors. There are only a few weeks each year when concepts like this are possible, which always makes them feel a little more special.

The seasons have a way of changing before I'm ready for them to.

Thankfully, the ideas never seem to stop coming.

One of my favorite moments in the creative process happens before anyone ever steps in front of my camera.

The studio is quiet. The set is finished. Everything I've been imagining, sketching, testing, and rearranging for days—or sometimes weeks—is finally standing in front of me.

I always take a minute before my client arrives.

Sometimes I just look at it and wonder if the photograph that's been living in my imagination is about to become real.

What I've learned over the years is that it never unfolds exactly the way I pictured it.

And I'm so grateful for that.

Because the moment another person steps into the space, the photograph stops belonging only to me. She brings her own story, her own personality, her own way of moving through the world. The conversations we have, the moments of laughter, the expressions that appear when she forgets about the camera—those become the heart of the image.

When people see the finished portrait, they often think they're seeing the realization of an idea.

I see something different.

I see what became possible because two people created it together.

That's still one of my favorite parts of this work.

I've been thinking a lot lately about what it actually means to return to yourself.

I don't think it means going backward or trying to find the woman you were before marriage, children, work, age, or all the other things that have shaped you. I don't think I'd want to go back to an earlier version of myself anyway. I've worked too hard to become this one.

To me, it's about remembering that underneath everything I'm responsible for, there's still a woman with her own desires, creativity, curiosity, sensuality, and dreams. A woman who deserves to be known just as deeply as everyone she's spent her life caring for.

That's the heart behind Return to You.

There is something surprisingly healing about stepping away from everyday life for a few hours. About being cared for, allowing yourself to play, and seeing what happens when you stop worrying about how you're supposed to look and simply become present in the experience.

The photographs are beautiful, of course.

But what I hope women leave with is something much harder to put into words.

A feeling.

One that says,
"Oh... there you are."

Recovering these past few weeks has forced me to slow down in a way I normally wouldn't.

One unexpected gift of that has been the chance to look back through galleries from years past. As I clicked through them, I realized I wasn't remembering the photographs first.

I was remembering the women.

I remembered what they shared with me while they were in hair and makeup, the excitement they felt walking into a new season of life, and the conversations we had in between photographs.

It made me realize that portraiture has never really been about creating beautiful images for me.

It's about honoring a moment before it quietly becomes a memory.

Maybe that's why the **40 Over 40** project has become so close to my heart.

Not because forty is a milestone that deserves celebrating more than any other age, but because so many women have spent decades building beautiful lives for the people they love while rarely stopping to celebrate themselves.

Looking back through those galleries reminded me that every chapter is worth remembering—not just the ones the world tells us are important.

Thank you to every woman who's trusted me with a piece of her story. It will never be something I take for granted.

The boys are back in school this week, and every year I notice the same thing.

Not how quiet the house gets—but how quickly I fill the space again.

The emails waiting for me.

The work that's been piling up.

The errands I've been putting off.

Before I know it, every open hour has already been spoken for.

It makes me realize how easy it is to slip right back into taking care of everything and everyone else before I've even stopped to ask myself what I need.

Maybe you know that feeling, too.

I love this season because it feels like a fresh start. A chance to settle into new rhythms and new routines.

My hope is that somewhere in yours, there's a little space reserved for you.

Whether that's finally booking the portrait experience you've been thinking about, picking up a hobby again, meeting a friend for coffee, or simply giving yourself permission to slow down for an afternoon—I hope you don't get lost in the shuffle.

When Roberta sent me this after her session, I found myself coming back to one sentence again and again:

"It was emotional to see the me I always feel inside looking back at me."

As photographers, we spend a lot of time talking about light, posing, styling, and creating beautiful portraits. Those things matter, and I care deeply about every one of them.
