This Juneteenth, I wanted to do something meaningful. I thought of my great-grandmother (born in 1936) and great-aunt (born in 1942)—two women who are Black history as soon as I decide on doing the Juneteenth shoot. They lived through Jim Crow, worked extra hard for everything they have (which through those times it didn’t amount to much for them), and yet they still speak with love and wisdom in every word. So I grabbed my film camera which I never use, and took them shopping for ’40s-inspired outfits, and we created a shoot that tells a story—raw, unplanned, full of soul. If these photos give you a glimpse of where we have come from as people, I’ve done my job. If you’ve made it this far repost your favorite slide.
