“I have used Mary twice for newborn photography. Both times I had a great experience! The most recent session, my newborn started to wake up and get fussy. Mary didn’t let that stop her! She still worked to calm him down and took great pictures even if it was not part of the original plan! There are a lot of poses that are super weird to set up and this is one of them. To get the right balance and angle, mom is (sitting) and leaning really far forward. But look at this gorgeous image! One of my favorites ever. Sometimes you have to trust the process to get the magic!

When are my appointments? I work Monday through Friday during business hours, and I shoot most appointments weekday mornings with some shorter afternoon appointments occasionally. I only work weekends for summer family sessions or holiday minis. Some people imagine photography as solely a side hustle but this has been a full time job for me for the last decade and I work a regular full time business week.

Things parents say the most at newborn sessions:
1) this is insane. Trying to adjust to a baby who is on night shift and not quite ready to move to days AND try to get a shower in, is a lot. This varies slightly baby to baby but mostly parents show up looking very tired.
2) Baby is so good and mainly just sleeps. The first two weeks, newborns sleep a LOT. I hear a lot of grandmas showing concern that baby hasn’t opened their eyes enough, but this is super normal. Enjoy and recover, they do begin to stay alert longer and express their feelings more strongly starting around week 3.
3) What the heck are these noises? Baby is soooo noisy! Newborns make different noises than older babies and usually most of us don’t spend a lot of time with our friends and families babies until they are older, so we don’t hear them. They snort and snuffle and whine in their sleep sometimes and my favorite, they kind of bleat like a little goat. Totally normal.
4) They hate being swaddled and like having their hands out and up by their face. Yes, newborns sometimes hate being wrapped but they like having *been* wrapped, if that makes sense. Once they know they are in a nice snug cocoon, they relax. It’s a reminder of moms very safe womb and their startle reflex is turned off for a while. But getting changed and wrapped can be very annoying for them.
5) Is baby okay? Am I doing this right? Yes, for 13 years every single one of my mamas has been doing amazing and their babies are in very good hands.
