I was hired to cater a WGA picket line tomorrow not realizing at the time that the writers would now be joined by my fellow SAG-AFTRA members. What a s**t show!
I just wanted to offer a little clarity for the folks outside of the Hollyweird bubble from the perspective of a guy that's catered for almost every writer, producer, actor, and studio executive in this circus.
The Studios (Warner Bros, Disney, Netflix, etc.) have been making a s**t ton of money with the way the "landscape" has changed in going from a traditional to now streaming model. They changed the game, and they aren't quite ready to change the pay scale. They don't feel that they have to...it's their house and they built it.
The writers (and now actors) feel that they should be compensated more since they're the ones that made the content that the studios are profiting off of hand over fist. Without the writers and actors, there's no TV shows or movies for the studios. They want the distribution of wealth to be a little more fair.
From an outsider looking in, you may think "What a bunch of rich babies crying in bags of money", but the fact of the matter is that the majority of the people affected by the strike were never rolling in it to begin with. The Brad Pitt's of the world will not be losing their houses over this s**t...it's my friends that run the Deli across the street from Warner Bros that rely on studio workers to pay their rent, it's the electricians that service the generators on set that need to pay for their kids summer camp, it's the prop master that's about to send his daughter off to college in the fall that doesn't know how he's going to make tuition payments, etc. etc.
Basically what I want people to know is that the majority of the folks that make the TV shows and movies that you love are never vacationing on yachts in Barbados. This town is WAY more blue collar than the media ever portrays it, with most folks barely keeping their head above water. Just slice off a slightly bigger piece of the pie for those that are sweating in the trenches.
Can't we all just eat some ice cream and get along?
