Sahmina McGregor has a daughter, Emma, with an Intellectual Disability Disorder. She noticed how kids at school treated her differently simply because they didn’t understand Emma’s disorder.

One day a nonprofit, Common Ground Society, came to the school and did a presentation on inclusion. After working with the school and speaking with Emma’s class about her challenges and what makes her unique, Sahmina noticed a change with how the other students acted around her daughter. They started to understand Emma a little more and found ways to include her in classroom and on the playground.

Sometimes the best way to lead to more inclusion is to simply talk about our differences and commonalities.

As a mother, who do you want your children to become? What character do you hope to instill in them?

Jen has two children, Claire and Noah. As a mother, she wants her kids to be themselves, whoever they choose to be. But if she could instill a single character trait, she wants them to stay curious.

“I feel like part of being a good human in the world is being open to continuing to learn throughout your whole life. Learn from other people. Learn from people’s perspectives.”

It’s Mother’s Day weekend, a time to celebrate motherhood. But what do mothers truly want? What kind of world do they want their children to grow up in? What fears do they have? What hope? What joy?

We hope to answer these questions with our new “Motherhood” series.

Lindsey Goodrich shares her answers surrounded by her three children; Liam, Esme, and Shelby.

“I think character develops and deepens throughout the course of one’s life, and I want them to build, and grow, and never stop learning.” -Lindsey Goodrich

Something special happens on Tuesdays at Santa Rosa Community College. A group of “spellers” come together to develop, learn, and connect. For those with apraxia, communication is challenging. Apraxia is a neurological disorder that causes a disconnection in the brain. Someone with this disorder may have words and thoughts but cannot express them verbally. This is where “spelling” comes in. Spelling opens the doors for communication by using letterboards and keyboards.
