“I didn’t understand any of it.”

Larkin did everything she thought was best for her pregnancy. But nothing prepared her for what happened at birth. Her son, James, was taken directly to the NICU. When she first met him, he was covered in tubes and wires. Then she found out he had Down syndrome and multiple health issues that required surgery.

Many of us take for granted what it means to feel included in society. For some, this is life changing.

Santa Rosa Junior College has a Speller’s Club that provides a safe space for spellers to practice and develop their skills. Every Tuesday they answer questions presented by Lindsey Goodrich and Buckminster Barrett. But this club does more than just develop skills, it gives them a sense of community and belonging.

As a mother, “it’s difficult to silence the inner voice that wonders if I’m doing enough.”

Erin has two young children, Charlie and Kody.

“I started a saying when my son was about two. He started getting nervous for school drop off so we started to say what he was going to be that day and it became my kids mantra.

‘I am smart. I am strong. I am brave. I am kind.’

Now I ask what four things they will be today and they repeat that to themselves.”

Palmer had multiple DUIs. He was arrested more than ten times before the age of 30. Looking back this scares him the most about his addiction. He could have killed someone.

But thankfully Palmer found sobriety through the help of a nonprofit called Haven House.

Aurora was born 2 months premature and Diana suffered from preeclampsia. There were multiple complications that sent Aurora straight to the NICU where she stayed for 5 months. This isn’t how Diana and Christina envisioned the birth of their daughter. It was a terrifying experience.

Noah McSweeney has apraxia of speech and autism. His life changed when his parents discovered “spelling,” a way of communicating through a letter-board or keyboard.

In this clip he’s working with his CRP, Buckminster. When Noah needs a break he steps away, hunches on the ground and covers his ears for a moment. Then he hears the garbage truck drive by, which leads to some natural communication between Noah and Buck.

Bradley is an artist in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. She considers herself an anxious person who tends to overanalyze things. But when she creates and paints her anxiety wanes. For Bradley, art is therapy. She focuses on the story in front of her. It forces her to slow down and find peace in creating.

As soon as James was born he was pulled out of the room and placed in the NICU. Larkin had no idea what was going on. Over three hours went by before she was able to see her newborn son. Then she found out he had Down syndrome and had multiple health issues that needed to be addressed. James would go on to have 31 surgeries and procedures.

Drugs and alcohol can mask our fears and insecurities helping us to feel more comfortable and relaxed. For someone suffering with addiction this can make it even harder to break free.

Palmer knew he had a problem early on but being able to mask his social anxiety was more appealing than giving up drugs and alcohol.

Palmer eventually found sobriety through a nonprofit rehab center called Haven House.
