With the presence of his younger generations, Khaizim, a Kazakh eagle hunter from western Mongolia, commences the training of his eagle for the upcoming eagle hunting festival. He does not mount his horse with his eagle in hand unless he is adorned in his full ceremonial attire, as his seven-year bond with his eagle is not something he trivializes for show. It is his means of survival in the subsistence nomadic lifestyle. Regrettably, it is likely that his grandchildren will not follow in his footsteps, as more and more young people are abandoning their traditional ways and seeking financial gain in the city.

Foo dog, or guardian lion statue protects the entryway to Khamariin Khiid monastery is Dornogobi, Mongolia. The entry way to Shambala or Shanghai La in Mongolian Buddhism, this site is the world’s energy center and a pathway to heaven.

Driving along the remote desert roads in the Khamariin Khiid Monastery complex, the site where the red hat sect of Mongolian Buddhism recognizes the entryway to Shambala or Shangri La to be, I had the pleasure to meet Chuluunchimeg Enkhbold as she was in the midst of recording her music video that she’s costumed for here. Tavan Dohio is a beautiful song written by the great Mongolian monastic Danzanravjaa
(1803–1856) who was a prominent Mongolian writer, composer, painter, Buddhist scholar, physician, and the fifth Noyon Khutagt, the Lama of the Gobi. His lyrics and Chuluunchimeg are beautiful companions together and I’m so excited to finally be able to share this photo with her and to the world. So happy to have crossed paths in the world’s energy center!
