This visit was supposed to be about meeting and photographing her youngest. And, it was.
But when I looked back through the images, this was the one that stopped me.
Not because she’s the center of the frame.
Not because she’s looking at the camera.
(She was probably trying not to be seen.)
But because she’s exactly where she always is — standing behind her children, steady and strong, making sure they feel safe enough to explore the world!

Some people come into your life as clients and somehow become family.
I’ve photographed so many milestones for her crew over the years — births, newborn days, growing babies, family seasons that are now my own memories too.
But this family . . . they showed up for mine in ways I’ll never forget. During one of the hardest years our family has ever experienced, they loved my son like their own. Her husband even made him an honorary drill instructor at the Marine base when they were stationed in South Carolina — something my son still has displayed on his bedroom wall.
And no matter where the Marines take them next, my family will always be grateful that for a season of our lives, we got to be loved by theirs.
