Meet HVCC! 💚
For Kainat Akhtar '16, returning to Hudson Valley Community College as a faculty member is a chance to give back to the place that helped shape her future. After immigrating to Troy from Pakistan as a child, she enrolled just two days after graduating from high school to navigate an unfamiliar academic landscape.
She says she chose the Individual Studies program for its flexibility; it allowed her to explore biology and psychology while building a foundation for scientific research. Faculty mentorship connected her to laboratory opportunities at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and helped her combine a passion for science with helping others.
After transferring to the University at Albany to study psychology and neuroscience, she entered Albany Medical College's Ph.D. program on a full scholarship, focusing her research on slowing the progression of Parkinson's disease. Today, she directs the Science and Technology Entry Program at Albany Medical College, introducing students to careers in science, while also returning to HVCC to teach psychology and mentor the next generation.
