It’s saddening to see all the flooding and destruction from this latest series of storms, especially affecting the working waterfronts and iconic sites up and down MidCoast. To help those affected, I will be donating the profits from any print sales now through the end of January.

Happy new year 🍾 This was not the photograph I envisioned when I rolled out of bed at 3:15. In an instant, the channel between my tripod and the twin lights was thick with the fog coming around the neck. With visibility and hopes of a sunrise at zero, I trekked back across the rocks of Loblolly Point in search of a clear perspective.

The golden glow to the northeast was the only indication that my drone had made it above the inversion. Where there had been open ocean just minutes before, was now a sea of cloud kissing the horizon. Two small specks amidst the featureless carpet of gray were the only sign of the towering lighthouses below. I watched and waited as the fog rolled over the island, revealing and enveloping the towers with ease. Half hour after sunrise, the light finally peaked above the bank of cloud. The warmth of the sun found the lantern of the north light as the clouds worked to quickly swallow it again.

The early morning sky showed a hint of promise as we layered up and hiked into the dunes. Despite the blistering cold, the sand was loose underfoot. As we rounded the section we had pinned on our map, a warm gradient of hues was illuminating the dappled clouds above.

With daybreak ahead, we composed the trail winding into the distant waves of sand. Yet, as if on cue, the sunrise shut off as we turned our cameras on. We watched with dismay as the color retreated back to the horizon. Our anticipation faded with each hue and the 4am alarm began to bite like the arctic December air.

As we came to terms with the moment that slipped through our lens, the sky transformed again. A vibrant band of yellow stretched across the horizon, and the mid-level clouds erupted in a spectrum of magentas against the ultra violet sky. With the same speed she had left, the sunrise returned with a newfound electricity.

Not a bad place for a beach house. I tried on several occasions to align the right tide and conditions for this shot. I love how the warm morning light spills through the trees and drapes shadows across the sand. You can’t help but feel the warmth of the summer day ahead and the refreshing chill of that incoming current.
