PERHAPS CAPTURING ONE MILLIONTH OF A PROCESS.

As I said before; I do enjoy the high windows and orientation of our home with respect to the varying Sun's seasonal position; and also I'm continuously amazed at how our eye collects information; allowing us to view an entire image, both in detail, depth and varying exposure. The eyes must take multiple samples, maybe hundreds, thousands or millions, of the same image, varying aperture (eye dilation), ISO & speed (brain), and stitching the results into one exposure... quickly... real time..; to that one image we see; allowing us to see detail in a perfectly exposed picture.. nothing under or over exposed; something a camera can attempt do in the form of HDR and bracketing but with difficulty and poor results and definitely not capable of instantaneously stitching hundreds let alone thousands or millions of the same image.. The human process is amazing. A miracle.
However, I'm also amazed how one can take one step of one's process of their eye-created image and imagine it; then set the camera's aperture, speed, ISO and white balance to capture this one step in a million step process. In this case a step that highly defines the discrete light and to not over expose my favorite image of my daughter (looking towards Europe, east, from Minot Beach).. setting ISO to 200, 1/1600" & opening the aperture to f/2.8.. One capture of what could be one millionth of a process..Just like I envisioned it :)

THRESHOLDS

A single view
A mutual stare
From Threshold
To Threshold
From here
To There
Towards Vanishing point
Passing couch, child
And transportation.
Over wooden floor
Through threshhold
To Disambiguation
And as you reach that visual journey's end
That life long termination
You may look back and see what you've passed
And see why this exposure was taken ….
Call it beating a dead horse.
Quoting that worn out Quotation.
What's Life all about?
well…
Plain & simple:
It's not about the destination.

AN EXCUSE TO ONCE AGAIN RUN ALONG THE GREEN

It was the Perseid Meteor Shower's fault
I needed some excuse to get up at 2:00 am on a work day.
To get myself outdoors. To get set-up.
I Thought of it as a pseudo-camping trip; but only with a pillow, blanket and pool lounge chair.
And tripod and camera of course…

After a half hour of camera adjustments, I settled in.
My window of "somewhat" dark sky is limited... Narrow.
I'm close to the city, so I have that unwanted Tucson light pollution to the west
And on the east, my neighbor's trees.
So my choice of view is to the north-northwest; away from the rising Perseus Constellation.
In my window, I find what I believe is the Cassiopeia Constellation (the lazy "W" or "M" depending on position)
I may be wrong on that constellation, but that's what I focused on. What I'm looking at.
I wanted to see the makeup of that constellation so I didn't want to reach too deep in the sky.
But I also didn't want to collect the surrounding light pollution, that annoying yellow-white haze…
I've seen pure dark. I've run in it at 2:00 am. Along the Green River. No one else for 20-30 miles. To lie in the middle of the trail for a quick 20' doze before moving on. Looking up and seeing "Stars!" and Galaxy just before closing my eyes. That's what I would have liked now. That absolute dark.
But that was an absolute impossibility with Tucson at my back and left.
I watched for about an hour. They were there. Meteors traveling close to 132,000 mph; just not in my window.
But I didn't care. It was a cool night. There are stars. And I'm good.
Soon I started to doze off while the camera collected twenty-second looks.
I Woke-up to a dawn sky and called it good. A great sleep. A nice Meteor shower.

I only captured one light glimpse. One high velocity streak; and not a good capture at that.
But in reality that wasn't the purpose.
I just needed some excuse to get up at 2:00 am on a work day.
To become one of many viewers over the past 2,000 years of known human record.
To fall asleep under the stars.
To run along the Green.

A MOTHER & HER DAUGHTER ~ A CHILD & THEIR PARENT

I was walking about.
And as they passed;
As I walked by.
I heard her say "Mom look at the flowers
…...….They're so colorful"
And as they passed I couldn't help but stop.
Turn around.
Set and shoot.
For In that moment.
As they passed
As I walked by
And within Her words.
I learned..
Not something new
But strengthened;
That it's best to live with no regrets.

To Travel is:

Like that point right when the Marathon start gun is about to go off; Or that first step of a long speed pack or trek across dunes, desert or forest trail. That point of knowing that the start cannon is about to go off for that massive group lake-swim Ironman beginning. That complete mayhem and splash. Or ski tips hanging over the edge of a Black Diamond ready to commit or to that foot resting on the strut of the plane just before you let go and jump, or that push-out into ocean deep with a paddle board to that small island of rock.. "It's just a mile out" you say as you paddle over dark, deep blue sea…or that 3:00 am , dark, all alone, 54 mile segment of a longer trail run where you become unsure of where you are.. "Did I miss the check point" you think, but logic over rides the panic and you continue on...Those moments of expelled breath to calm those starting jitters of travel…Or that start of what you hope is a marriage that lasts forever or those days of becoming a parent where everday is a challenge that is well accepted. And we cannot forget those starts of adventurous jitters of a new job, school or State. Knowing that it is a change, a lesson in impermanence and that deep breath of letting go is part of that travel process..Or to the soldier with his or her fellow friends and comrades by their side; whose combined actions protect our rights and Country. But actions that put those protectors in harms way; and in those moments His or Her's only preservation is their fellow Americans and thoughts of getting home as they travel through the fogs of war. Or the relief in being around to see another dawn and sunrise; wherever it may be.. One of light-to-shades-of-deep-blues, and shadows of silhouette blacks. A promise of one more day of early morning coffee.
"To Travel is" is like those adventures and parts of life, where...like in ALL of the above, you commit. And at that instantaneous moment. That expelled breath. You accept. You think to yourself... "Ok, Here we go".

“Whereas the beautiful is limited, the sublime is limitless, so that the mind in the presence of the sublime, attempting to imagine what it cannot, has pain in the failure but pleasure in contemplating the immensity of the attempt” Kant

And for me….For those moments of sublimity; that time of "letting go", where one can be blessed to hear a breath's echo. I get a glimpse of Nature's infinite depth.
And within those wonderful moments it has gone beyond my sight. I have inhaled the imagery.
