Saw The Beat last night and Tony Levin was amazing. They played classic King Crimson songs, and the man plays the Chapman Stick and somehow covers bass, melody, and texture all at once. Total genius on his instrument.

He’s played with Peter Gabriel, Zappa, and a million others. And he’s a photographer too, so yeah, my kind of guy. 📷🎸

Las Vegas, 1990s. I hired an Elvis impersonator and a gold Cadillac and cruised the Strip. Somehow this was a normal Tuesday for me. 😎

The whole time, he spoke in a deep Tennessee drawl so convincing I started wondering if I’d rented a man or a time machine. To this day I don’t know whether he was doing his act or just living his truth. I never saw him break character, not even to ask for directions.

Carloads of people lost their minds and threw clothing at us. Busloads of tourists screamed. He didn’t flinch. I, meanwhile, was trying to hold a slow shutter steady in a moving convertible while a stranger’s jacket landed in my lap.

“Thank you, thank you very much.” 📸

Yesterday I had the chance to fly for a few minutes over Guatemala. 🇬🇹

It was the first time I had been at the controls of a small airplane in 45 years. Very fun experience ~ Thank you Wendy Pineda for the early birthday gift!

It also brought back memories of a very different era. Before 9/11, I was often invited to visit the cockpits of major airlines during flight as a journalist. I was fortunate to witness some incredible moments from the jump seat—including the famous approach into the old Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport, considered one of the most spectacular and challenging landings in the world, as well as flights in/out London and Singapore.

Those experiences remain among my favorite travel memories. ✈️😍

One of the most unusual nights of my travels…

In July 2013, I flew from Basel to Marrakech on an EasyJet ticket that cost less than $35—still the cheapest airline ticket I’ve ever purchased (excluding mileage awards).

The trip began with an unexpected jolt.

On the drive from the airport, I was filming through the van window when a man suddenly approached the vehicle, reached inside, and demanded to see my phone. Apparently he believed he had appeared briefly in one of my videos. My driver didn’t intervene, and for a few tense moments I wasn’t sure how the situation would end.

When we finally arrived at my hotel, things became even stranger.

The staff informed me that I would be the only guest in the entire four-story riad that night. Even more surprising, the managers wouldn’t be staying there either. As I settled into my room, I discovered something I hadn’t expected: there were no locks on the doors.

After watching one too many thriller movies growing up, I have to admit it wasn’t the easiest night to fall asleep. The people from the airport incident knew exactly where I was staying—the hotel name was printed on the shuttle van—and my imagination was working overtime.

Of course… nothing happened.

Morning arrived quietly, and what remained wasn’t fear but appreciation. The room itself turned out to be one of the most fascinating I’ve ever stayed in, filled with beautiful Moroccan design and light that transformed the walls and ceiling into works of art.

Looking back after visiting more than 100 countries, experiences like this are incredibly rare. 99.9% of my travels have been welcoming, kind, and completely uneventful. But every so often, a journey gives you a story you’ll never forget.

I still believe the world is meant to be explored. Sometimes the most memorable destinations aren’t the ones where everything goes according to plan—they’re the ones you’ll still be talking about years later.

🇩🇰 Copenhagen, Denmark.

I’ve been visiting Copenhagen on and off since 1976, when I came here as a young man and had the good fortune to see jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie perform in the Tivoli Gardens.

What has always stayed with me is that design seems to be everywhere in this city.

Some cities impress you once. Copenhagen continues to surprise me every time I visit, hope to go back soon…

Hong Kong, sometime in the 1980s.

I had enough budget for either a pair of models in commercial lifestyle scenes (shopping, eating, etc.) or to rent a traditional Chinese junk—the iconic sailboat in the harbor.

I chose the models.

As I was photographing them, one of the models suddenly said, “Hey Ken… look behind you.”

I turned around and there it was—a beautiful junk sailing directly through the background of my shot.

That day I got both the models and the boat for the price of one.

Sometimes photography is skill.

Sometimes it’s just good luck. 🍀📸

Great Wall of China, late 1980s. 🇨🇳

Looking back, I appear to be auditioning for the opening sequence of an MTV music video.

Fortunately, the Great Wall has aged much better than my wardrobe. 😅
