Can you imagine?

Living on the water – Can you imagine? We were off to visit a couple of floating fishing villages east of Santa Marta, Nueva Venecia and Buena Vista. I had seen floating villages in Myanmar and visited one in Cambodia so I had a general idea of what to expect. There would be people who live in houses on stilts above the water....

Indigenous Peoples of Colombia

A photography trip to Colombia would not be complete without visiting an indigenous community. We were fortunate to visit three, the Wiwa people, the Kogui people, and the Wayuu people, all of which we photographed. They all maintain strong spiritual connections to the land, viewing mountains, rivers, and animals as part of a living, sacred balance. Oral traditions, ceremonial dances, intricate weaving, and community decision-making, all guided by elders, reinforce a worldview rooted in respect for nature, ancestral knowledge, and collective responsibility....

A Toucan Surprise

Colombia is a rich habitat for birds, in fact it is the worlds leading country for bird diversity. There are close to 2000 different species and we wanted to take advantage of this opportunity on our trip to Colombia. For Jeff and I, as photographers there are two types of birding options: We go to them by touring their environment. For us, this is a walk through the woods, scrub or jungle to spot birds with a local guide....

Bird Stories

One of the highlights of our Colombian trip was bird photography. Our goal was to photograph as many big and/or colorful birds as we could find. Colombia did not disappoint! At the end of our trip we had spotted 140 species of birds, most of which were colorful, albeit small. A big aid in our quest was our bird guide, Jose Ivan....

China’s famous karst peaks are found in the South China Karst region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its unique “tower” (fenglin) and “stone forest” (shilin) landscapes. Our location in Guilin in the Guangxi province is one of the areas that features these dramatic limestone peaks.

When you think of China, what color comes to mind? For me (and most people), I think of Red. This symbolizes luck, happiness, prosperity, and vitality. And Communism. Red is everywhere: the national flag, during festivals like Chinese New Year in the form of lanterns and decorations, and at traditio...

Huangshan Mountain is known as the yellow mountain, not because it is yellow, but because the Yellow Emperor deemed it so in around 747 AD. It is also more than one mountain.

The Great Wall I couldn't wait to experience the Great Wall of China. It's something I've known about since I've been a child. Something I learned about in grade school. And recently I was astounded by a Great Wall documentary. The Great Wall of China is a UNESCO World Heritage and one of the seven new wonders of the world. The wall spans close to 13,000 miles and was build over several periods starting around 700 BC....

While on our trip to China, I was shown a famous photo of a farmer leading his ox while under a large Banyan tree, sun beams shining through the early morning mist. This photo had a little of everything, almost the perfect photo. Are we going to try and replicate this I ask? Yes, when we get to Xaipu, which is next up....

This is the story of one photo. Our story begins in October of 2019 when I saw a photo of an old fisherman using cormorants to aid in fishing with amazing Karst peaks in the background. I had never heard of Karst peaks, but I soon learned. I wasn’t sure what a cormorant was, but I soon learned. Adding to all that I did not know, I had no idea where to go to capture my version of this photo....

Beijing: Our Introduction to China Beijing is one of the largest cities in the world with a population of over 21 million people. It is quite modern, with swaths of apartment buildings soaring into the sky. Fortunately, it has preserved a few elements of its past. During our 3 days in Beijing, we experienced several traditional monuments of the city. We traveled through the old neighborhoods in a bicycle rickshaw, and walked through beautiful parks with groups of seniors engaged in a variety of morning activities....
