Just before 1 a.m. on Halloween, the Old Forge, Greenwood, and Avoca fire departments were dispatched to the 300 block of Oak Street for a working building fire.
First-arriving crews found a commercial building heavily involved in flames and immediately began a defensive attack, protecting neighboring homes and buildings.
The incident escalated to a second alarm, with a tanker task force also dispatched. A water main break in Moosic limited the hydrant system’s ability to supply the volume of water needed to battle the blaze.
Fire departments from as far away as Scott Township and Elmhurst, along with Scranton, Clarks Summit, Pittston Township, and many others, responded to assist.
As of 3:30 a.m., firefighting operations remain underway. The building continues to burn following a major collapse.
